Astros duo immaculate

Garcia, Maton both throw nine-pitch, three-strikeout inning in the same game

- Arlington, Texas

Houston starter Luis Garcia and reliever Phil Maton each threw an immaculate inning — nine pitches, three strikeouts — after a big opening offensive outburst for the Astros.

Martin Maldonado, their 35-year-old veteran catcher, was in the middle of it all.

Maldonado had a tworun double in Houston’s six-run first on manager Dusty Baker’s 73rd birthday, later homered and was behind the plate for all the strikeouts — 14 in all — as the AL West leaders wrapped up their seventh consecutive series victory against the Texas Rangers with a 9-2 win Wednesday.

Phillies 3, Marlins 1: Garrett Stubbs hit a threerun homer with two out in the ninth inning, sending Philadelphia to a dramatic victory over Miami. Alec Bohm sparked the winning rally with a one-out single against Tanner Scott (2-2). Pinch-hitter J.T. Realmuto walked before Yairo Munoz struck out swinging for the second out. That brought Stubbs to the plate, and he drove a 2-2 slider deep to right for his third homer. He admired the drive for a few seconds before yelling toward the Phillies’ dugout and throwing his bat down in celebration.

White Sox 13, Tigers 0: Yoan Moncada had five hits and five RBIS, including a run-scoring single against Kody Clemens, and Chicago beat Detroit for a three-game series sweep.

Twins 5, Mariners 0: Ryan Jeffers hit an RBI single off the center-field wall to break a scoreless tie in the seventh inning and Minnesota went on to beat Seattle.

Diamondbacks 7, Reds 4: Zac Gallen pitched seven effective innings despite an early bout of wildness, and Arizona used a four-run eighth inning to top Cincinnati.

Royals 3, Giants 2: Whit Merrifield broke a 2-2 tie with an eighth-inning sacrifice fly and Kansas City edged San Francisco to avoid a three-game sweep.

Blue Jays 7, Orioles 6 (10): Vladimir Guerrero Jr. hit his 16th homer, then singled home the winning run in the 10th inning that lifted Toronto over Baltimore. Orioles rookie Adley Rutschman hit his first career home run and got his first two RBIS. Ryan Mountcastle homered twice, but Baltimore lost for the eighth time in nine meetings against Toronto.

Notes: Rockies setup man Tyler Kinley will likely miss the rest of the season with a flexor tear in his right elbow . ... The Orioles released a statement from Georgia Kousouris Angelos on Wednesday that sternly rebuked the lawsuit last week that named both her and Orioles CEO John Angelos as defendants. John Angelos is Georgia’s son. They were sued by his brother Lou Angelos, who claimed John has seized control of the Orioles at his expense and in defiance of their father Peter’s wishes. Peter Angelos became the Orioles’ owner in 1993, but his public role has diminished in recent years and he turns 93 next month.
