MOVIE QUIZ

- Paramount Pictures —C.J. Lais Jr

Last week’s movie quiz was all about sequels. In honor of the release of “Lightyear,” let’s turn our attention to prequels, those movies that come later in release but earlier in plot.

“Lightyear” is the origin story, of sorts, of Buzz Lightyear, the character from the “Toy Story” sequels, in that it is the supposed real-life action film that inspired the toy action figure/piece of merchandising.

1. One part of “The Godfather Part II” is a prequel to the events of the original “The Godfather.” Both films won the best picture Oscar in their given years, but which won more Academy Awards overall?

2. In 2021’s “Cruella,” Emma Stone plays the younger version of Cruella De Vil, previously portrayed in the 1961 animated movie “One Hundred and One Dalmatians,” as well as by Glenn Close in two live-action films from 1996 and 2000. But what Cruella trademark item was missing in the Stone film because of a ban enacted by Disney across all its films beginning in 2007?

3. Which one of the movies in the famed Sergio Leone/clint Eastwood spaghetti western trilogy is the prequel: “A Fistful of Dollars,” “For a Few Dollars

More” or “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly”?

4. This 2011 horror prequel is set in 1982, the same year as the John Carpenter movie that inspired it was released, and 60 years after the first movie based on the same source material came out. What is it?

5. “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom” is the 1984 prequel to 1981’s “Raiders of the Lost Ark,” but its most lasting contribution to cinema might be what was spawned in response to its increased depictions of violence. What was it?

6. 2013’s “Oz the Great and Powerful” tells the story of how the title character came to be known as “The Wizard of Oz,” previously known as Oscar Diggs. Speaking of “Oscar,” the three leading ladies of this movie — Michelle Williams, Mila Kunis and Rachel Wiesz — all competed for that award two years earlier for the films “Blue Valentine,” “Black Swan” and “The Whistleblower.” True or false?

7. “Monsters University,” the collegeset prequel to “Monsters, Inc.”, cast as the dean of the school what Oscar, Emmy, Tony, BAFTA and Golden Globewinning Dame of the British Empire?

8. “The Scorpion King,” the first leading role for Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, is a prequel to what film?

9. “X-men: First Class” is a prequel to the rest of the “X-men” series set in 1962 during the Cuban Missile Crisis. James Mcavoy and Michael Fassbender play Charles Xavier and Erik Lehnsherr/ Magneto, roles made famous by Patrick Stewart and Ian Mckellen. Here, Jennifer Lawrence takes on the role of the mutant Raven, a childhood friend of

Robert De Niro as the young turn-of-the-century Vito Corleone in "The Godfather Part II" shares some of the Oscar-winning film's running time with Al Pacino as his now-grown son Michael in portions set in 1958. That's right, it's a prequel and a sequel all wrapped into one. Don't think too hard about how the De Niro section and all of the original "Godfather" actually make up the plot of the Mario Puzo source novel.

Xavier’s. Which age difference is greater, the one between Mcavoy and Lawrence or the one between Stewart and original Raven portrayer Rebecca Romijn?

10. This 2011 film was the first theatrically released animated movie, a spin-off from a hit fairy tale-inspired franchise, and has a sequel due out this December. What is it?
