One of four upstate facilities to benefit from Bipartisan Infrastructure Law

ALBANY — The Albany International Airport has been awarded $2 million of funding through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to rehabilitate its traffic control tower.

Albany International is one of four upstate airports that have been awarded nearly $25 million in funding from the Federal Aviation Administration’s Airport Terminal Program, U.S. Senate Majority Leader Charles

Schumer and Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand said Thursday. The awards come as the latest round of funding for the program, created under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, which seeks to boost development projects that address the aging infrastructure of the nation’s airports.

The $2 million awarded to Albany will be used to rehabilitate the airport traffic control tower, including existing mechanical, electrical and HVAC building systems, as well as improve energy efficiency and bring systems up to current standards.

Buffalo Niagara International Airport was granted $7 million, Syracuse Regional Airport Authority was awarded $8.6 million and Greater Binghampton Airport received $7 million for upgrades to their facilities.

The renovations slated for Albany International Airport will be minimal compared to the larger, $100 million project announced last fall that will expand its terminal and provide more space for its security checkpoint and concessions. That development will be funded by a $60 million state grant, the largest the airport has received in its nearly century-old lifetime.

New York airports are expected to receive over $937 million in federal funding through the creation of the law, according to the senators’ announcement.
