Ualbany falters in upset bid vs. Stanford

Sarah Jaques scored a man-up goal with 5:49 to go, Emma Capanna caused a turnover by Shonly Wallace with 12 seconds on the clock and No. 18 Stanford escaped the upset bid with a 21-20 victory over visiting Ualbany on Sunday in a women’s lacrosse nonleague contest.

Wallace finished with seven goals to lead the Great Danes, while Katie Pascale added four goals and two assists.

Vermont trounces Siena women

Maddie Erskine scored five goals and had two assists, Jane Trauger added three goals and two assists and Ava Vasile also scored a hat trick as Vermont recovered from an early stumble to overwhelm Siena 20-6 at Virtue Field in Burlington, Vermont on Sunday afternoon. Mary Soures led the Saints with three goals.

Shepard set for Giants’ return

Wide receiver Sterling Shepard will remain the New York Giants’ longestten­ured player on the roster. A person with knowledge of the contract talks told The Associated Press on Sunday night the 30-year-old Shepard has agreed to a one-year contract at the veteran minimum of $1.16 million.

Commanders retain Payne

Washington is keeping Daron Payne around, thanks to the secondbigg­est contract for a defensive tackle behind only Aaron Donald. The Commanders agreed to terms with Payne on a four-year deal worth $90 million.

A spying operation on behalf of World Cup host Qatar bugged a 2017 hotel meeting between FIFA president Gianni Infantino and Switzerlan­d’s then-attorney general during an investigat­ion of soccer officials, Swiss daily Neue Zürcher Zeitung said Sunday. The report said intelligen­ce operatives linked to a former CIA officer wiretapped a meeting involving Infantino and Swiss federal prosecutor Michael Lauber at a Qatari-owned hotel in Bern, which also then housed the emirate’s embassy.

Obituary: MLB’S Jesus Alou, 80

Jesus Alou, who joined with his brothers Felipe, a future Hall of Famer, and Matty in blazing a trail for Dominican natives in the major leagues, died Friday. He was 80. His death was announced by the San Francisco Giants, with whom he played his first six seasons.
