Syracuse’s Mintz declares for NBA draft

SYRACUSE — Syracuse freshman Judah Mintz announced Monday he will enter into the 2023 NBA draft while maintainin­g his college eligibilit­y.

Mintz, who was named to the ACC’S All-rookie team, averaged 16.3 points per game last season, second only to Glens Falls’ Joseph Girard III, who averaged 16.4. Mintz finished second in the ACC’S Rookie of the Year award that went to Duke’s Kyle Filipowski.

Ohio St., Lady Vols to Sweet 16

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Jacy Sheldon made a tiebreakin­g jumper in the lane with 1.8 seconds left to lift No. 3 Ohio State to a 71-69 victory over No. 6 seed North Carolina and help the Buckeyes advance to the Sweet 16 for the second straight season. In Knoxville, Tenn., reserves Sara Puckett and Jillian Hollingshe­ad led five Lady Vols in double figures with 13 points apiece as fourthseed­ed Tennessee routed No. 12 seed Toledo 94-47 to advance to their second straight Sweet 16 in the Seattle 3 Regional.

Shiffrin tops $1M in prize money

OBERHOFEN, Switzerlan­d — Mikaela Shiffrin earned another piece of World Cup history — the first Alpine skier with $1 million to top the seasonendi­ng race prize money list.

Shiffrin’s win in a giant slalom Sunday was her 13th World Cup victory since October and lifted her total prize money to $1.04 million.

That set the all-time Alpine World Cup mark and moved her above Marco Odermatt, whose giant slalom win Saturday in his last race of the season set a men’s record with $1,017,000.

Shiffrin’s previous best prize total was $958,000 in the 2018-19 season.

Morant’s 8-game ban completed

Ja Morant’s eight-game NBA suspension is over, and the two-time All-star guard can rejoin the Memphis Grizzlies, though it’s unclear exactly when he’ll play. Coach Taylor Jenkins said he would like Morant to practice or at least participat­e in a shootaroun­d before game action.

Morant was suspended after he livestream­ed himself displaying a gun at a strip club in Colorado.

Ball expects to be ready for camp

CHARLOTTE, N.C — Hornets point guard Lamelo Ball said he anticipate­s being ready for training camp in September after suffering through an injury-plagued 2022-23 season in which he sprained his left ankle three times and fractured his right ankle, all of which limited him to 36 games.

Georgetown hires Cooley as coach

SYRACUSE —Syracuse was voted No. 1 in both the Inside Lacrosse/ IWLCA and USA Lacrosse Magazine polls Monday. It’s the second time in program history the Orange are No. 1.
