Stearns into French 3rd round
PARIS — French Open debutant Peyton Stearns produced the biggest win of her career by defeating former champion Jelena Ostapenko to reach the third round at Roland Garros on Wednesday.
Stearns, a former player at the University of Texas, only turned professional in June last year.
Third-seeded Jessica Pegula also advanced after Camila Giorgi retired due to injury and Elina Svitolina rallied past qualifier Storm Hunter 2-6, 6-3, 6-1. In the men’s bracket, former runner-up Stefanos Tsitsipas ousted Roberto Carballes Baena 6-3, 7-6 (4), 6-2.
Rodgers’ tweaked calf is “fine”
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. — Aaron Rodgers could be back fully practicing with the New York Jets on Friday after straining his right calf last week.
The 39-year-old quarterback, acquired last month from Green Bay, was injured while participating in conditioning drills last Tuesday. Rodgers downplayed the injury at the time but hasn’t been a full participant in practice since.
“He’s fine,” coach Robert Saleh said Wednesday. “He’s just doing a bunch of rehab.”
Saleh added the team hopes Rodgers will fully participate by Friday — or next week at the latest.
Belichick: Pats have “moved on”
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. — Patriots coach Bill Belichick says the team has moved on after losing two days of workouts for violating NFL offseason workout rules.
“It’s in the past. We’ve moved on,” Belichick said Wednesday as his team resumed their optional offseason conditioning program.
The violation reportedly was for holding a mandatory meeting that was required to be optional.
Predators hire Brunette as coach
NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The coaching shuffle in Nashville is complete, with Andrew Brunette officially hired as the Predators coach on Wednesday, a little over 12 hours after the team announced that John Hynes was fired.
Kraken extend GM Ron Francis
SEATTLE — The Seattle Kraken signed general manager Ron Francis to a three-year contract extension on Wednesday through the 2026-27 season after the franchise reached the second round of the NHL playoffs in its second year of existence.
Maple Leafs hire Treliving as GM
TORONTO — Brad Treliving is the new general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs.
The team made the announcement Wednesday, less than two weeks after firing Kyle Dubas.
NASCAR issues more penalties
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — NASCAR issued its second massive penalty in as many days by levying huge fines Wednesday against Stewart-haas Racing for a “counterfeit part” found on Chase Briscoe’s car in a secondary inspection after the Coca-cola 600.
SHR’S No. 14 team was docked 120 points in both the owner standings and Briscoe’s driver standings, and he also was stripped of 25 playoff points. John Klausmeier, the crew chief, is suspended six races and was fined $250,000.
Sevilla wins Europa League
BUDAPEST, Hungary — Five months after scoring the winning penalty in the World Cup final, Gonzalo Montiel converted the clinching spot kick in the Europa League final to earn Sevilla a seventh title in the competition at the expense of Jose Mourinho’s Roma on Wednesday.
