The senior season in outdoor track is rapidly coming to a close for Averill Park sprinter Abbie Wicks, so she decided to be quick at the Group 2 championships and conclude her final sectional meet at her home track in grand fashion.

Wicks delivered a signature performance May 24 as she piled up victories in the 100 meter sprint (12.85 seconds), 100 hurdles (16.26), 200 (26.42) and 400 (58.4) to help the Warriors finish second in the team competition behind Burnt Hills-ballston Lake.

“I am happy for the success,” Wicks said.

For her efforts, Wicks has been selected as the Times Union’s Girls’ Athlete of the Week for the period May 22-28.

Wicks will next compete at the state qualifiers Thursday and Friday at Shenendehowa. The senior earlier this month made an oral commitment to compete for Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, N.C. The Golden Bulls are an NAIA Division II school.

“I really wanted to go somewhere in the South,” Wicks said. “I liked the school and the coaches there.”

Prior to excelling at the Group 2 championships, Wicks posted a victory at the 80th Eddy Meet when she topped the field in the 100 in a time of 12.70. The senior got to haul home one of the huge trophies awarded at the Eddy Meet, which was held for the first time since 2019.

At the Suburban Council

championships, Wicks claimed the title in the 100 (12.78) and finished second in the 400 (57.25).

The senior is looking to the state qualifiers, followed by the state championships that are being held June 9-10 at Middletown High School. As much as Wicks wants to win every time she competes,

she is after something quite specific when reaching the state championships.

“I want to get PRS (personal records),” Wicks said.
