Biden the best choice to lead the country
County Legislator Paul Burgdorf ’s letter (“Biden, time to go,” Jan. 4) attacking President Joe Biden demands response. Burgdorf advises the president to step aside because his poll numbers were low. Per New York Times columnist David Brooks, poll respondents reflect their current personal frustrations, not their future votes.
Regarding age, Burgdorf says the president presents as frail and aged. I wonder what any of us would look like if we worked 16 hours a day, 365 days a year for three years. Young voters should know today that Americans who exercise, maintain a healthy weight and follow doctor’s advice like Biden are performing well beyond previous norms, and accumulating critical knowledge, even if balding or limping. The orchestrated Republican drumbeat about the president’s age is a shiny object, aimed at the hope of Democrats running a lesser candidate.
Biden will build on significant outcomes from 2021 to 2023: 26% higher stock market (S&P), historically low 3.7% unemployment, bipartisan passage of long-overdue infrastructure investments, support of major union agreements, consumer inflation reduced to 2.8%, Medicare drug price negotiations and much more. Coming out of the 2020 COVID-19 recession, these achievements should not be overshadowed with partisan red herrings.
Regardless of the challenges Biden faces, like Roosevelt, Eisenhower, Kennedy and Reagan, he will manage his immense resources, his health, intelligence, time, executive teams, legislative knowledge and international relationships for the benefit of the nation. The U.S. presidency is no place for amateurs, and no other candidates come close to the president’s experience, expertise and decent values needed at this time.
