Panthers agree to terms with OLB Clowney

-

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Carolina Panthers have bolstered their pass rush, agreeing to terms on Wednesday with veteran free agent Jadeveon Clowney, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2014 draft.

Terms of the deal were not immediately released.

Clowney grew up in Rock Hill, South Carolina, about 20 minutes from where the Panthers play their home games.

Clowney, 31, is coming off a strong season with the Baltimore Ravens in 2023, where he had 9⁄ sacks and will play outside linebacker in Carolina’s 3-4 defensive scheme. Clowney spent his first five years with the Houston Texans, and has moved around quite a bit since with stops in Seattle, Tennessee, and Cleveland and Baltimore. He has 52⁄ sacks during his career.

Clowney helps offset the loss of outside linebacker Brian Burns, who was traded to the New York Giants earlier this offseason. Carolina managed a league-low 27 sacks last season. Broncos: Denver is signing former Detroit Lions wide receiver Josh Reynolds to a two-year, $14 million free agent contract, a person with knowledge of the deal told The Associated Press.

The person spoke anonymously to divulge the deal, which the Broncos didn’t immediately announce.

Reynolds’ signing continues a makeover of the Broncos’ offense that included trading away former first-round pick Jerry Jeudy to Cleveland for a pair of mid-round draft selections.

Hall of Fame: The Pro Football Hall of Fame has honored longtime NFL assistant coach Monte Kiffin and more than a dozen others as part of its Awards for Excellence program.

The Hall on announced the 15 recipients of the award that goes to assistant coaches, athletic trainers, equipment managers, film and video directors and public relations directors. The award began in 2022.

Kiffin was one of the architects of Tampa Bay’s defense that won the Super Bowl in the 2002, teaming with Tony Dungy to build the vaunted “Tampa 2” scheme that was copied by several other teams around the league.

The other two assistants honored were Bill Mcpherson, who was hired by Bill Walsh in San Francisco in 1979 and helped the 49ers win five Super Bowl titles, and former Pittsburgh receivers coach Lionel Taylor, who helped develop Hall of Famers Lynn Swann and John Stallworth.
