Sage’s Hines backing up one big season with another

Grace Hines had a breakout season for the Sage women’s lacrosse team last year and the senior continues to do the job this season for the Gators.

The 5-foot-7 midfielder, a Guilderlan­d High graduate, has scored 38 goals with three assists for 41 points. Both the goals and the points rank first in the Empire 8 Conference. Hines had seven goals and an assist in a 23-12 loss to Marywood on March 3, seven goals in a 12-6 victory over Castleton on March 9 and seven goals in an 18-12 triumph over Potsdam on March 19.

Last season, Hines scored 50 goals with 12 assists for 62 points. In 44 career games, all starts, she has 135 goals and 21 assists for 156 points. She also has 98 ground balls, 41 caused turnovers and 52 draw controls.

Sage is 4-5 after a 16-9 loss to Western New England last Tuesday. Hines had three goals.

Talia Spenziero (Clifton Park)

The senior diving standout, a Shenendeho­wa High graduate, was one of four Siena women swimmers named to the College Sports Communicat­ors Academic All-district Team, it was announced last Thursday. She carries a 3.82 grade-point average in health studies. Spenziero and seniors Demi Bobarakis (Niskayuna High) and Audrey Shultz (Chester, N.J.) were named for the second straight year while senior Emily Sulik (Ravena-coeymans-selkirk High) was a first-time selection.

Nick Logan (Queensbury)

The senior distance runner was named North Atlantic Conference Athlete of the Week on April 2 after a strong effort for the Cobleskill men’s track team at the Hamilton Invitation­al on March 31 in Clinton. The Queensbury High graduate finished second out of 47 runners in the 1,500-meter run with a personal record time of 3:59.41. Last Saturday, he finished third out of 50 runners in the 1,500 with a time of 4:05.73 at the Pioneer Spring Invite in Utica.

Steven Koval (Averill Park)

The sophomore belted a threerun home run to provide the big hit as the RPI baseball team topped Union 5-3 in the first game of a doublehead­er last Saturday in Troy. The Engineers dropped the second game 2-1 but came back to post a 7-3 victory in Sunday’s finale to go 13-7 overall and 7-2 in the Liberty League. The Averill Park High graduate was 4-for-8 in the three games. Koval is hitting .239 (16for-67) with two doubles, three triples, two homers, 12 runs scored and 14 runs batted in.

Syrita Faraj (Troy)

The Tamarac High and Sage graduate was named to the Empire 8 Conference 25th Anniversar­y women’s basketball team, it was announced last Friday. Faraj, who played at St. Rose this past winter, spent two seasons with the Gators. She was the conference’s Rookie of the Year as a freshman and was Player of the Year as a sophomore after setting a program single-season record with 524 points.

Gianna Guido (Clifton Park)

The freshman was named Fighting Tiger of the Week on April 1 after leading the 4-8 Cobleskill softball team to 12-1 and 14-2 victories over Wells on March 29 in Aurora. The Shenendeho­wa High graduate was 3-for-7 on the day and all three of her hits were home runs, two in the first game and one in the second. She finished with five runs scored and seven runs batted in.

Colin Lynch (Guilderlan­d High)

The sophomore first baseman is batting .400 for the Hudson Valley baseball team. The Vikings are 15-1 with a 14-game winning streak. The Guilderlan­d High graduate has 14 hits in 35 at-bats with 13 runs scored and nine runs batted in. Freshman Matthew Carrera of Mount Sinai leads the team with a .479 average.
