Experiment­al film fest in ABQ

Boundaries are meant to be pushed with film. And technology has made it easier to accomplish these tasks. For the past nine years, Bryan Konefsky has brought innovative pieces of film to the Experiment­s in Cinema v9.72 film festival. He is the festival director and personally views all of the films submitted to the festival.

This year the festival will screen more than 100 films from 30 countries.

“This is an event that started small and has grown over the years,” Konefsky says. “It’s also very difficult to put on because there are film festivals popping up all over. It’s nice, though, to have more festivals showcasing the industry.”

The Experiment­s in Cinema film festival will run from Monday, April 14 through April 20 at various locations such as the Guild Cinema, Southwest Film Center and the National Hispanic Cultural Center.

Konefsky says along with the films, there will be special lectures, hands-on filmmaking workshops and a program featuring films made by New Mexico middlescho­ol students.

“The goal is to inspire a new generation of filmmakers,” he says. “Films are being made all over the world using unconventi­onal or experiment­al ways.”

Konefsky also is excited about collaborat­ing with the Instituto Cervantes to bring Antoni Pinet for a lecture. Pinet is a freelance contempora­ry art/film curator, experiment­al film producer based in Spain. He also has run the Cine Invisible section at the Xcèntric (Centro de Cultura Contempora­nea de Barcelona) since 2004.
