More delays set up ‘Super Tuesday’
State brackets are to come out then
There was no new snow Saturday. There were, however, more high school basketball cancellations.
The remaining three metroarea prep games on the metro schedule Saturday spiraled quickly down the proverbial drain along with the others, with St. Pius and Hope Christian postponing for 48 hours.
The Sartans had an afternoon doubleheader scheduled with Grants in District 5-5A, both championship games. But apparently road conditions were a concern, and both were pushed back to Monday.
The girls will play at 5 p.m., the boys at 7 p.m.
Hope Christian’s girls were to play host to St. Michael’s early Saturday afternoon in the District 5-4A final; the Huskies and Lady Horsemen were rescheduled for 6 p.m. Monday.
As a result, the Hope Christian boys, originally set to host a district final on Monday night, were forced to wait another day and will now host at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
With St. Pius and Hope going silent, that forced the hand of the New Mexico Activities Association.
The NMAA had hoped to release both Class 5A state brackets and the 4A girls — the three classes tied to St. Pius and Hope — today.
Saturday’s postponements mean more adapting. The NMAA will release all 12 brackets — which amounts to a staggering 192 teams between boys and girls — on Tuesday.
The NMAA on Saturday said it would release the brackets for four girls divisions, 2A-5A, at about 9 a.m. Tuesday.
The remaining brackets, including both Class 6A brackets, are scheduled for release at about 11 p.m., which is roughly two hours after the completion of the final two boys district championship games, in 1-6A and 2-6A.
Boys and girls district semifinal games are scheduled Monday in 1-6A, 2-6A and 5-6A, in addition to St. Pius and the Hope girls. District tournament title games are set to be played Tuesday night.
First-round state tournament games for the girls are still scheduled for Friday, with the boys playing Saturday.
