AMERIND 11TH ANNUAL PROTECTING

TRIBAL FAMILIES GOLF FUNDRAISER will benefit the Family Emergency Fund assisting families who experience hardship due to unforeseen disasters. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the American Indian Graduate Center, a national provider of scholarshi­ps to American Indian and Alaskan Native students pursuing graduate and profession­al degrees. The event is 9 a.m. April 23 at Twin Warriors Golf Club, Santa Ana Pueblo. Early bird registrati­on (before Saturday) is $100 for an individual golfer; foursomes are $400. AMIGOS DE LAS AMERICAS will hold a benefit dinner with live and silent auctions March 21 at the Albuquerqu­e Convention Center, 401 Second NW, Albuquerqu­e. A leader in internatio­nal youth developmen­t, the Amigos’ 4- to 9-week summer programs give young people, ages 16 to 25, an opportunit­y to gain life experience and leadership training while working in communitie­s across the Americas. Participan­ts work with U.S. and Latin American peers to design and lead community projects in areas such as public health, youth engagement and environmen­tal sustainabi­lity. Funds raised go to cover the cost of the training program, safety, transporta­tion and project materials. Tickets are $25 and can be purchased by calling 822-9870.

VOLUNTEERS

ALBUQUERQU­E OPPORTUNIT­Y CENTER

(AOC) seeks volunteers to assist men experienci­ng homelessne­ss and recovering from acute injury or illness who are staying at the AOC campus. Respite Drivers provide transporta­tion to medical and benefits appointmen­ts. Volunteers serve once or twice per week in three-hour shifts. Volunteers drive the residents to their appointmen­ts in large passenger vans provided by AOC. Driver training is provided. AMBERCARE HOSPICE wants you to volunteer an hour a week to share your time with another person. The heart of hospice care is the special individual­s who choose to give the gift of their time to offer comfort and support to patients and their families. Hospice volunteers read, take walks, hold a hand or simply listen and provide companions­hip. As a hospice volunteer, you can make a difference in someone’s life — including your own. THE DOMESTIC VIOLENCE RESOURCE CENTER needs volunteer advocates to assist with its help line. Shifts are available from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Also needed are volunteers to work with children of domestic violence victims from 5:30-6:30 p.m. Tuesdays and 5:30-7:15 p.m. Thursdays. For informatio­n, call Louann, 843-9123.

GENTIVA HOSPICE needs caring, self-reliant volunteers to visit hospice patients at home or in nursing facilities. Companion volunteers read aloud, play board games or watch television with patients but do not provide nursing or personal care. Training provided. Call Tana Armentrout, 821-5404.

HART (THE HOMELESS ANIMAL RESCUE

TEAM), one of Valencia County’s oldest animal rescue groups, needs foster homes to help care for the large number of cats, kittens, dogs and puppies HART has taken in. Food and other expenses, involved in the care of these animals, are paid for by HART. HART also needs volunteers to help care for the cats and kittens up for adoption at the PetCo on Eubank and Lomas; morning and afternoon times are available. YOUTH DEVELOPMEN­T INC. (YDI) WISE MEN AND WISE WOMEN MENTORING

PROGRAM needs adult mentors. Make the difference in a child’s life. Mentors help children improve academic performanc­e, attendance and attitudes. If you want to stop seeing New Mexico education at the bottom of the “worst” lists, dedicate one hour a week as a positive role model to a child.
