OUR PICKS FOR THE WEEK

- BY JACKIE JADRNAK

W hen you think about the holidays, do stamping heels and swirling skirts come to mind, along with wailing voices and staccato hand-claps?

And we’re not talking about the reaction when your kids don’t get the presents they want.

This is the rhythm of flamenco, which is hot and heavy as we transition into the New Year.

Head over to Skylight, 139 W. San Francisco St., at 8 p.m. Sunday through Wednesday and you’ll get a taste of Niño de Los Reyes, a Madrid-trained (that’s the one in Spain) dancer who will join others, including students from the Maria Benitez Institute for Spanish Arts, in a show presented by EmiArteFlamenco. Tickets are $20$25 and can be purchased at www. skylightsantafe.com or by calling 9820775.

“De Lo Bolero A Lo Jondo” (from the Bolera school to the Jondo art) will be presented 8 p.m. Saturday, Sunday and Tuesday, and continuing the following week at the Benitez Cabaret at The Lodge at Santa Fe. Tickets are $15$40 and available through www. ticketssantafe.org, 988-1234. And head over to the Scottish Rite Temple, 463 Paseo de Peralta, at 7 p.m. Wednesday for a fundraiser for the building that will feature flamenco, a video, history of cultural links and the impact of author Washington Irving on the preservation of the Alhambra, which influenced the local building’s architecture. Tickets are $20, available from www.brownpapertickets. com or by calling 982-4414.

HOLIDAY CIRCUS:

Wise Fool New Mexico is presenting its first performance in its new home at 1131-B Siler Road at 4 p.m. Sunday. Its students, performers and teachers will swing from trapezes, climb aerial silks, perform acrobatics and add a little clowning into the mix. Tickets for $5-$20 are available from www. brownpapertickets.com.

NEW YEAR’S EVE:

Don’t you think it makes sense to enter the New Year laughing? The Lodge at Santa Fe appears to think that’s a good idea with a Komedy Concert Gala & Dance, beginning with two comedy concerts at 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. Thursday with headliner Bill Kirchenbauer, along with Albuquerque’s Roger C. Blair and opener Pete Christensen from Phoenix. Kirchenabauer’s credits include “Mork and Mindy” and “Growing Pains,” as well as his own spin-off, “Just the Ten of Us.” Tickets are $50 for the concerts or $10 if you just want to attend the dance. You can get them at the front desk or by calling 992-5853 and asking for Alyssa. If the cold doesn’t deter you, the City Different is planning its first year-end countdown on the Plaza with festivities starting at 9:30 p.m., and including music by Alex Maryol and Lumbre del Sol, bonfires, food trucks, hot cocoa and a surprise digital media/ light show climax. Entry is free to all.
