Balanced attack spurs UNC

ENMU’s women’s game is canceled

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — Brice Johnson had 16 points and 16 rebounds to help No. 7 North Carolina beat UNC Greensboro 96-63 on Monday night in its final nonconfere­nce game.

Marcus Paige added 14 points for the Tar Heels (11-2), who took a double-digit lead by midway through the first half and led by 19 by halftime against the Spartans (4-8). UNC led by at least 11 points throughout the second half though it didn’t land a finishing blow until a 9-0 burst in the final 8 minutes.

The Tar Heels had six players in double figures.

No. 9 BUTLER 92, IUPUI 54: In Indianapol­is, Kelan Martin scored 19 points, and Roosevelt Jones had 17 points and five steals as Butler routed crosstown rival IUPUI.

The Bulldogs (11-1) have won eight straight. IUPUI (4-11) was led by Darell Combs with 11 points.

No. 15 DUKE 105, ELON 66: In Durham, N.C., freshman Brandon Ingram scored 26 points for Duke.

Ingram had 11 rebounds and freshman Luke Kennard added 18 points for the Blue Devils (10-2). Tanner Samson had 17 points to lead Elon (9-4).

No. 16 VILLANOVA 77, PENN

57: In Villanova, Pa., freshman Jalen Brunson scored 22 points to help Villanova roll past Penn (5-7).

The Wildcats (10-2) scored the first 14 points and led 30-3, cruising in their final game before the Big East opener Thursday against No. 6 Xavier.

No. 21 UTAH 115, COLLEGE

OF IDAHO 74: In Salt Lake City, Dakarai Tucker and Kyle Kuzma both scored 17 points to help Utah.

Jakob Poeltlo had 15 points and 10 rebounds for the Utes (11-2). Aitor Zubizarret­a scored 19 points and Joey Nebeker had 15 for the College of Idaho (7-7), an NAIA school.

Women

No. 1 UCONN 83, No. 6

MARYLAND 73: In New York, Breanna Stewart scored 23 points to help UConn beat Maryland (11-1) in the Maggie Dixon Classic.

Stewart missed the Huskies’ game a week earlier with a sprained right ankle, but showed no signs of the injury vs. Maryland as the Huskies (10-0) won their 47th straight game.

No. 3 NOTRE DAME 62, NO. 10 OREGON STATE 61:

In South Bend, Ind., Madison Cable scored 15 points and Lindsay Allen made two free throws with 6 seconds left to help Notre Dame hold off OSU.

Freshman Marina Mabrey added 13 points for the Irish (11-1). Gabriella Hanson’s 18 points led Oregon State (9-2).

No. 7 KENTUCKY 81, TENNESSEE STATE 39: In Lexington, Ky., Evelyn Akhator had 14 points and 13 rebounds to lead Kentucky (11-0). Jayda Johnson led Tennessee State (5-7) with 19 points.

LOUISIANA 41: In Starkville,

Miss., Chinwe Okorie and Victoria Vivians both scored 13 points as the Bulldogs (121) won their seventh straight. Nanna Pool had 18 points for SLU (1-10).

No. 11 STANFORD 73, CHATTANOOG­A 30: In Stanford, Calif., Erica McCall scored 18 points as Stanford crushed Chattanoog­a. McCall was 9-for-16 from the floor and added eight rebounds for the Cardinal (10-2). Alicia Payne led Chattanoog­a (8-5) with nine points.

No. 15 FLA. STATE 77, JACKSONVIL­LE 60: In Tallahasse­e, Fla., Shakayla Thomas scored 23 points as FSU (10-3) opened a 10-0 lead about 3½ minutes in. Christin Mercer led Jacksonvil­le (6-7) with 18 points.

No. 17 ARIZONA STATE 69, CAL STATE NORTHRIDGE 46: In Tempe, Ariz., Arnecia Hawkins scored 18 points for Arizona State (9-3) in a win over Cal Northridge (2-10).

No. 21 UCLA 70, UC RIVERSIDE 56: In Riverside, Calif., Monique Billings scored 15 points to spur UCLA (8-3) past UC Riverside (6-7).

Notes

ENMU: Eastern New Mexico’s exhibition women’s game scheduled for Monday at UTEP was another casualty of Winter Storm Goliath and the accompanyi­ng hazardous travel conditions. The game was canceled.

The Greyhounds return to action noon Thursday to host Northern New Mexico College.

WNMU: Women’s head coach Rusty Kennedy has resigned to pursue a job as athletic director at Midway (Ky.) University. Matt Enriquez, men’s basketball assistant coach, is taking over.

WNMU is 5-5 this season, 35-56 in Kennedy’s tenure.

Enriquez played at WNMU and recently was elected into the school’s athletic hall of fame. He had been on the men’s staff for 10 years.

TEXAS: Starting center Cameron Ridley is sidelined indefinite­ly to a broken left foot from practice Sunday. He averages 12.7 points a game.
