A LOOK BACK AT THE TOP SPORTS STORIES IN NORTHERN NEW MEXICO
OPENING: A month after the messy departure of Española Valley High School boys basketball coach Richard Martinez, the job has finally been posted. Martinez led the Sundevils to two state championships before he was fired by outgoing superintendent Bobbie Gutierrez. Martinez is being investigated the New Mexico Public Education Department for “serious ethical and criminal misconduct,” which might include his disciplinary methods, according to one report.
SIGNING: Los Alamos senior Sierra Foley cowboys up, signing to play volleyball for New Mexico Highlands. Foley had 313 kills last season to lead the Hilltoppers. Foley added 38 aces and blocked 28 as Los Alamos went 19-4 and made it to the Class 5A state quarterfinals.
NEW COACHES: Española Valley’s vacant head football coaches position has been filled after Miguel Medina, the school’s most successful coach, resigned last month. Anthony Hinsley, a Los Alamos graduate who was an assistant coach at La Cueva, Valley and Albuquerque High, has spent the past 13 years coaching in Texas.
And David Sanchez takes over the reins for the Taos basketball team, replacing interim coach Benny Mitchell. Sanchez has been an assistant coach with the program since 2012 and was previously head coach for Peñasco from 2009-12, twice reaching the semifinals.
MOVING UP: West Las Vegas graduate Vera Jo Bustos not only remains with the University of New Mexico women’s basketball program in the wake of its coaching change, but also got a promotion, moving up from video coordinator to director of basketball operations.
