BETTER YET

Ford’s 2016 Focus has evolved into an excellent compact

- KEN WALSTON

Thanks to continual improvements, Ford’s popular Focus compact has grown into one of the better cars in its class. And the 2016 version is definitely the best Focus yet.

From its attractive, evolutionary exterior design to its surprisingly upscale cabin, Focus models run the gamut from entry-level econobox to near-luxury boulevardier to high-performance hatch (the smoking-hot ST).

Our tester, a lineup-topping Titanium hatchback, impressed not only with its interior’s high-quality materials and handsome design, but with its well-executed functionality. Long the object of disdain among auto reviewers, Ford finally has a top-notch infotainment package in the Sync 3 touchscreen interface.

The secondary controls are conveniently located and for the most part self-explanatory. And there are myriad packages that can upgrade the car’s technology features to levels rarely found in this class of car.

The Technology Package — which should be tagged the Safety Package —is a bargain at $795. Included are blind-spot warning (a must for busy interstate driving); cross-traffic alert (indispensable for backing out of parking spaces when sandwiched between a pair of towering pickups or SUVs) and lane-keeping alert (warns you you’re drifting into an adjacent lane).

The Titanium is graced with leather-clad heated buckets, plenty comfortable enough for long-distance drives. Rear passengers, though, are likely to find legroom a bit on the short side. Leather also wraps the steering wheel and shift knob.

Power from the Titanium’s standard 2.0-liter, twin-cam inline four-cylinder is likely adequate for the majority of buyers. (Those looking for more will check out the aforementioned ST model.) It pays back for its moderate acceleration with excellent fuel economy.

The six-speed automatic transmission — of a design known as an automated manual transmission — could be smoother at low speeds, but is otherwise generally unobtrusive.

A high note is the way the front-drive Focus handles. Its fairly firm, Euro-style suspension tuning doesn’t sacrifice a smooth highway ride for cornering competency. Sharp steering and strong braking enhance driver confidence.

Tight build quality, quiet on-the-road demeanor and handling, well-crafted interior and an up-to-date tech menu give the Focus an impressive résumé. It’s a must to be cross-shopped in the compact class.
