OMAHA, Neb. — A rough start turned into a smooth finish for Thomas Hatch.

The Chicago Cubs’ thirdround draft pick threw a complete game and extended his shutout streak to 26 innings in Oklahoma State’s 1-0 victory over UC Santa Barbara (42-19-1) in the College World Series on Saturday.

Hatch scuffled early before settling in to record the first shutout by the Cowboys (4220) at the CWS since 1986, a game current pitching coach Rob Walton started.

“Not the easiest game in the world to pitch, because the first game of the World Series has a little vibe and buzz about it to kick things off,” OSU coach Josh Holliday said. “He handled himself exceptionally well.”

ARIZONA 5, MIAMI 1: In the second game of the CWS, Nathan Bannister matched his career high with 11 strikeouts in seven innings and the Wildcats capitalized on Hurricanes starter Michael Mediavilla’s rocky first inning for a victory Saturday night.

Arizona (45-21), in the CWS for the first time since winning the 2012 national title, will play Oklahoma State on Monday night in a Bracket 1 winners’ game. The No. 3 national seed Hurricanes (5013) will face UCSB in an elimination game that afternoon.

Bannister, who made his 13th straight start of at least six innings, confounded Miami batters by mixing in his curveball with an upper 80s fastball.

ALL-AMERICANS: New Mexico’s Chris DeVito and New Mexico State’s Daniel Johnson were named to the ABCA/Rawlings All-America Team on Saturday.

DeVito, UNM’s catcher and designated hitter, hit .375 with 16 homers and was named a second-teamer. He went in the eighth round of the first-year player draft to the Kansas City Royals.

Johnson, a fifth-round selection by the Washington Nationals, was the WAC Player of the Year after hitting .382 and stealing 29 bases.
