Culver, Gerald Sylvester

-

Gerald Culver died peacefully at his home in Albuquerque, NM on August 12, 2016 from the devastating disease of dementia.

He was born in Lansing, MI in a tent on a cold January 16, 1936, the oldest of 4 children born to Melvin Darling Culver and Catherine Clark Somerville Culver. He was a proud Marine who served in the Korean War. After returning to Lansing, he worked in a bank until he worked for a telephone communications company performing mechanical and structural work under the direction of Richard Cahill, with whom he had a lifelong friendship and because of whom he moved to New Mexico in 1978. He was always a skilled carpenter and great craftsman with wood, an avid hunter and fisherman and a golfer. In his early years he rodeoed and raced motorcycles as well, but his passion for golf became dominant. He played many tournaments as a member of the NM Senior Golf Association and marshalled at the Arroyo del Oso Golf course until his disease became debilitating.

He is survived by his son, Jeffrey, of Northport, FL and his daughter, Patricia Hinson, of Goldsboro, NC; his six grandchildren; his sister Margie Watson and family, of Nokomis, FL, his sister Carolyn Wells and family, of Lansing, MI, and his sister Sara Jane Britton of Gladwin, MI. He is also survived by Kay Prather, his loving partner of the last 19 years. In honor of his memory, contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, PO Box 21400, Albuquerque, NM 87154, or 505-2664473.
