Lobos win in final exhibition match

University of New Mexico senior Niko Hansen netted the game-winning goal with six minutes left in regulation Saturday night to lift the Lobo men’s soccer team to a 1-0 exhibition win over the Washington Huskies at the UNM Soccer Complex.

The match marks the third straight shutout for the Lobos as they have not allowed a goal throughout exhibition play.

The goal marks Hansen’s fourth in the Lobos’ three exhibition shutouts to kick off the 2016 season. It was his second game-winner.

UNM starts the season Thursday at Indiana at 3 p.m.

Lobo volleyball wraps preseason

The UNM volleyball team finished exhibition play Saturday night in Johnson Gym sweeping four sets (25-9, 25-11, 25-19, 25-21) against an alumni team.

In the team’s lone tuneup before the regular season, the Lobos received strong performanc­es across the board.

“I really liked it,” head coach Jeff Nelson said. “We were flying and serving tough, and we were really attacking at the net. I like what we did.

“Everybody got to play a couple games and I liked what everyone did. I think it got us ready for next week.”

The Lobos start the season Friday against Abilene Christian in Johnson Center.

Kim one stroke off 54-hole record

GREENSBORO, N.C. — Si Woo Kim followed his tournament-record 10-under 60 with a third-round 64 to increase his lead to four strokes in the Wyndham Championsh­ip.

The 21-year-old South Korean player had an 18-under 192 total at Sedgefield, a stroke off the tournament 54-hole record set by Carl Pettersson in his 2008 victory.

Kim is in contention for his first PGA Tour victory for the second time in a month after losing a playoff to Aaron Baddeley in Alabama in the Barbasol Championsh­ip.

U.S. AMATEUR: In Bloomfield Hills, Mich., Australia’s Curtis Luck birdied the third playoff hole to beat Michigan sophomore Nick Carlson in the U.S. Amateur semifinals.

THE LEGENDS CHAMPIONSH­IP: In French Lick, Ind., defending champion Juli Inkster shot a 4-under 68 for a share of the first-round lead with Becky Iverson and Trish Johnson.

AUTO RACING: In Bristol, Tenn., the water-logged Sprint Cup race at Bristol Motor Speedway was called after just 48 of 500 laps were run because of rainstorms throughout Saturday night. It will resume today at 11 a.m.

... In Brainerd, Minn., Antron Brown and Ron Capps gave Don Schumacher Racing a sweep of the raindelaye­d final rounds of the NHRA Northwest Nationals at Brainerd Internatio­nal Raceway.

HORSE RACING: In Ruidoso Downs, Sara Leann Morgan’s Coronas First Diva sped to the fastest-qualifying time during the second day of trials to the Grade 1, $3 million All American Futurity on Saturday afternoon.

Saturday’s horses with the five-fastest times from 15 trials compete against the horses with the five-fastest times from Friday’s 15 trials in the 440-yard All American Futurity on Labor Day.
