When kids misbehave, parents sue

Drone video threat and ‘burping kid’ are cases in point

- BY MARY RATCHFORD ALBUQUERQUE RESIDENT

In a recent Journal, there were two articles about parents suing school districts for the antics of their kids: “Parents sue over teen’s arrest for making clock” and “Teen behind drone videos fights expulsion.” Earlier in the week, we read about the “burping kid.”

The clock is well known as a mechanism for detonating a bomb. Shouldn’t the parents have warned the school that their son was going to bring a homemade clock to class, thus eliminating any worries and everything that has followed?

Not doing so, in this day where everyone is jittery about terrorism, was unthinkingly stupid and lacking common sense on the parents’ part. Maybe the word is out that if you do something stupid and the kid is arrested, you can sue. (The parents asked for $15 million!)

A trial is scheduled and, hopefully, the jury will find for the school, which was taking the precautions I would hope a school would take. And I hope that the school district countersues the parents for the cost to the school district that has been incurred.

This would be a good lesson for other parents.

In the other case, a parent allowed his or her son to mount a gun and a flamethrower onto a drone, fire both in their backyard (!), then the boy posted online videos of the dangerous stunt (or practice run) and threatened “to shoot people at school.”

The school expelled him. I would hope so!

The kid said it was just a joke(!) and is now suing the school.

To the parents of this kid: Take away his gun and flamethrower, if you can.

What are these people thinking? Ahh, the big lawsuit payout. I hope that the jury denies his readmission to school and any award, because, hey, maybe he wasn’t kidding! We never know until the shots are being fired, do we? Is caution still allowed? As to the burping kid, the parent(s) should have taken the boy back to the gym class and made him apologize to the teacher and the class.

Nope. Lawsuit filed against the school.

What are these kids learning? Responsibility?

Nope. They are learning that stupid antics pay.

These are our tax dollars going to the families of these misbehaving, disrupting and/or dangerous kids.

Please stop it if you are ever on a jury.
