Feminists back rights of transgender
WE WRITE AS two veterans of the lesbian-feminist revolution of the 1970s and ’80s. We stood then and continue to stand for everyone’s right to self-identification and selfexpression.
Women’s Liberation Front (WoLF) does not speak for the vast majority of true feminists who have come to understand and support our trans brothers and sisters as they seek to live authentically (“Feminist group seeks to block trans bathrooms, lockers,” Aug. 13). It is unfortunate that members of WoLF insist on calling themselves feminists.
It’s time for members of WoLF to learn about the differences among sex, gender, gender identity and gender expression. It’s also time for them to realize that transgender women are not a threat to cisgender women. It’s sexual predators who are the threat and if WoLF wants to do something about those people, good, get after it!
Meanwhile, real feminists support the right of all of us, regardless of gender identity, to make the decisions about how we live, free from prescribed rules about who we love, how we work, how we play, how we express gender. And, yes, even where we pee.
Because we are feminists, we support the rights of transgender people to live their lives — in every aspect — consistent with their gender identities.
