Aggies QB arrested for misdemeanor battery
LAS CRUCES — New Mexico State junior quarterback Tyler Rogers was arrested Friday by the Las Cruces Police Department on a misdemeanor battery charge, the Las Cruces Sun-News reported.
Rogers turned himself in Friday after a bench warrant was issued for his arrest Aug. 14 in Doña Ana Magistrate Court on a misdemeanor charge of battery against a household member. It was unclear on Monday if the alleged victim, Rogers’ girlfriend, was cooperating with police, the Sun-News reported.
“We are letting the process run through,” NMSU coach Doug Martin said. “Since it is a misdemeanor, there isn’t a suspension coming forth right now.”
The Aggies open the season Sept. 3 at UTEP.
“I was very disappointed in hearing the news but we are in the information gathering stage,” NMSU athletic director Mario Moccia said.
“These are allegations that we take very seriously and we look forward to getting as much detail as possible so the university can be informed and the athletic department can make an informed decision moving forward.”
MICHIGAN STATE: Coach Mark Dantonio has named fifth-year senior Tyler O’Connor the team’s No. 1 quarterback. O’Connor has made only one career start, but it was a big one. He helped Michigan State to an upset win at Ohio State last year while Cook was injured.
RUTGERS: Chris Laviano will be the starting quarterback in Rutgers’ power spread offense. Laviano started 11 games last season in Kyle Flood’s final year as coach. He edged TCU transfer Zach Allen for the job.
UTAH: Suspended Utah receiver Cory Butler-Byrd has pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of criminal mischief after authorities say he damaged a university police patrol car and building last month.
