CATCHES OF THE WEEK
Bryan Cantril of Albuquerque caught two 18-inch rainbow trout Saturday on the Pecos River using a copper John Barr.
Logan Feuerherd, 8, of Corrales, caught a 20-inch rainbow trout at Shady Lakes on Sunday using a spinner.
Kenny Hansel of Los Alamos caught and released a 4.2-pound smallmouth bass and a 4.11-pound largemouth bass on Saturday at Navajo Lake. He was using a spinner bait.
Darrius King, 8, of Santa Fe caught his biggest smallmouth bass, weighing in at 1½ pounds, at Conchas Lake on Sunday. He was using a weedless jig with a rage craw trailer.
Matt Lane, age 33 of Littleton, Colo., landed a 21½-inch rainbow last Saturday at Shady Lakes using a worm.
Cody McDowell, 10, of Albuquerque caught a 21-inch rainbow trout on Saturday at Seven Springs Brood Pond. He was using a Kastmaster.
Malcolm Keller Mueller, 14, of Los Ranchos, caught the record 24½-inch rainbow trout Saturday at Shady Lakes with a red and silver spinner.
Landon Schukis of Winnipeg, Canada, caught and released a 34-inch tiger muskie at Bluewater Lake on Sunday. He was using a Storm soft shad minnow.
Dave Smith of Albuquerque caught and released a 6.52-pound largemouth bass on Saturday at Navajo Lake. He was using a crank bait.
Joe Weber of Albuquerque caught and released a 4.7-pound smallmouth bass on Sunday at Conchas Lake. He was using a Zara Spook.
AROUND THE STATE
SHADY LAKES: The trout are biting moderately on salmon eggs and spinners. Sizes range from 9-inch pan-size rainbows up to 18 inches. The lake restocks Aug. 29 in advance of Labor Day. Bass action reports have been all over the place, from anglers getting skunked to those catching eight before noon. Bass plastic worms and crawdads remain the favorite. Bluegill remain active on flies and worms; highest reported catch was over 50 in one day with a fly rod. There are some gigantic bluegill hanging out at the trout gutting station.

SANDIA LAKES: Fishing at Lakes 1 and 2 has been very good using hot dogs, green night crawlers, and garlic chicken livers. The lakes last stocked on Friday with 8,000 pounds of channel catfish. Cassandra Espinosa
ISLETA LAKES: Fishing at both lakes is fair for catfish. Best baits reported are garlic chicken liver, shrimp and worms. The tagged derby continues. Isleta Lakes will be stocked for the Labor Day holiday. Gregory Jojola
NOTES from GAME AND FISH: The PECOS RIVER’S steam flow on Monday was 73 cfs. Trout fishing was good using parachute Adams, prince nymphs, bead-head, pheasant tail nymphs, San Juan worms, yellow humpys, bead-head, hare’s ear nymphs, Panther Martins, Mepps, PowerBait, salmon eggs and worms. Streamflow on the RIO GRANDE on Monday at the Taos Junction Bridge was 251 cfs. Fishing was fair to good using poundmeisters, bead-head, hare’s ear nymphs, copper John Barrs, Kastmasters, spinners, PowerBait and worms for trout. Fishing was slow to fair using streamers and small jerk baits for smallmouth bass. Anglers caught a few northern pike using streamers. BLUEWATER LAKE was slow with a few tiger muskies caught on swim baits and crank baits. COCHITI LAKE was fair using top water lures, jerk baits, tubes and jigs for smallmouth bass and largemouth bass; for white bass, fair using crank baits, top water lures and curly tail grubs; fair to good using cut bait, shrimp and liver for catfish. Stream flow on the SAN JUAN RIVER as of Monday was 622 cfs. Fishing through the quality waters section was good using black and gray, foam wing emergers, San Juan worms, parachute Adams, small, beadhead, pheasant tail nymphs, root beers and crystal flash midges. Good midge hatches were coming off in the midafternoon and evening. Fishing through the bait section was good using spinners, night crawlers and salmon eggs for trout.
