HERE’S A WAY to spice up those ■ slow-moving, yawn-inducing soccer games: skip the first 90 minutes and go straight to the shoot-out. — Jack Bowers, Albuquerque

THE ONLY BASKETBALL team in the world that could beat Team USA right now are the Golden State Warriors. — JC, SoCal

THE REST OF (the) world has almost caught up with US Men’s Basketball, Serbia, Spain, Croatia, Australia, Argentina, even China is looking good. To Quote the old Benson and Hedges commercial, the US men’s team is still a “silly millimeter” better, but no longer the dominant force. … The US women’s team on the other hand , proves over and over the completion is still lagging. The WNBA plays some incredible basketball, and, also, in all fairness to the Collegiate world, the UConn women’s program has to move to the WNBA. — Vince Guillen

MR. EDITOR, surely someone in your department could have proofread the headline regarding the deceased public address announcer for the Isotopes and Lobos. This is but one example of sloppy editing in your department. The caption and the article say Stu, but good old Stan is in the headline. I’ll bet his wife is surprised she called him the wrong name all these years! — Ed(itor)

SHAME ON the Isleta Resort and Casino and the Pueblo of Isleta for forcing out its Director of Golf after 20 years of exemplary service. Mr. Ciolek’s professionalism was above reproach and he did a tremendous job in making the Isleta Golf Club one of the best golf experiences and values around. I urge the golfing community to boycott playing golf at Isleta and take their business elsewhere, as I will be finding another course to play. — Thank you, Roland G. Lucero

GOOD TO SEE Arizona’s Sean Elliott back in tow, playing in Notah Begay III’s golf tournament. Elliott spoke about the ringing in his ears while playing in the Pit. That effect was due to the Pit’s “decibel busting” crowds of 18,018 back in those days. During the 1987-88 season, along with the Lobos’ win over Elliott’s No. 1 ranked Arizona Wildcats, UNM also hosted and defeated No. 5 Wyoming, No. 18 UTEP along with UCLA, Ohio State and NMSU. “Can you hear me now?” No, no actually I couldn’t. — N.M.
