Outdoor activities offered on Saturday

Valles Caldera National Preserve is marking the 100th anniversar­y of the National Park Service with camping and a movie tonight, and outdoor activities Saturday.

In celebratio­n of the National Park Service’s 100th anniversar­y this week, there will be an outdoor party this evening through Saturday afternoon at the Valles Caldera National Preserve west of Los Alamos.

Camping, fishing, archery and hiking are all part of the family-friendly celebratio­n, which is being presented by the New Mexico Wildlife Federation, the New Mexico Youth Conservati­on Foundation and the Park Service. The event, including Saturday breakfast and lunch, is free but donations are welcome.

The event starts with camping tonight at the preserve’s Banco Bonito campground. Advance registrati­on for camping is required as space is limited.

Campers may arrive starting at 6:30 p.m. tonight and set up between 6:45 and 7:30 p.m. From 8:30 to 10:30 p.m., there will be an outdoor showing of Ken Burn’s movie “The National Parks: America’s Best Idea.”

It is not necessary to camp out to take advantage of Saturday’s events, which start with breakfast burritos at 7:30 a.m. and continue with archery and fly-tying from 8:30 to 9:45 a.m., hiking and fishing from 10 a.m. to noon, lunch from 12:15 to 1 p.m., fishing on the Rio San Antonio from 2 to 4:15 p.m., breaking camp from 4:15 to 5 p.m. and departure at 5 p.m.

People 12 and over must have a valid state fishing license to take part in fishing activities.
