TOP PICKS FOR THE WEEK

- BY JACKIE JADRNAK

With Indian Market done for another year, the kids in school and August fading into September, you know what that means, don’t you? Fiestas! Yes, it’s only a week until the burning of Old Man Gloom, but some preFiesta activities already are slated, starting with a music show on the Plaza 3-7 p.m. Saturday featuring Mariachi Azteca de Santa Fe, White Buffalo, Baile Ilusion and Sociedad Colonial Española de Santa Fe. That show is free and sure to set you in the mood for the festivities that will extend through Sept. 11.

And, to poke fun at the City Different’s many foibles, the Fiesta Melodrama takes to the stage at the Santa Fe Playhouse, 142 E. De Vargas St. Titled “The Bridges of Santa Fe County,” the show, directed by Vaughn Irving and Andrew Primm, will be performed 7:30 p.m. today and Saturday, and 2 p.m. Sunday, with shows continuing through Sept. 11. Tickets are $20-$25, or $30 for Saturday’s gala. You can get them at santafeplayhouse.org or by calling 988-4262.

COVER GIRL:

After a performance career in San Francisco, native New Mexican Emmaly Wiederholt has returned and is presenting her dance-theater performance of four vignettes, all starting with the declaration “This is me,” but becoming increasingly fantastical. Shows are 8 p.m. today and Saturday at Teatro Paraguas, 3205 Calle Marie, and tickets are $15-$18. You can get them through www.covergirl.brownpapertickets.com. The show is presented through Malinda LaVelle’s Project Thrust. LaVelle and Wiederholt created the show during a weeklong artist residency at The Peñasco Theater.

LOHENGRIN:

Wagner’s opera has given us everything from a traditional wedding march to some passages on the Beatles’ “Help!” album and even inspired an elaborate, real-life castle. Learn this and more as Joe Illick, artistic director for Performance Santa Fe, launches this season’s popular series of “Notes on Music” 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at United Church of Santa Fe, 1804 Arroyo Chamiso Road.

Tickets are $30, available through performancesantafe.org or by calling 984-8759.

SHAKESPEARE: And don’t forget that Ducdame Ensemble is performing two plays through the week: “Twelfth Night” at 8 p.m. Monday and Tuesday at Meow Wolf, 1352 Rufina Circle ($35, meowwolf.com), and “Merchant of Venice” at 7 p.m. today and Saturday at the Performing Arts Center at Santa Fe High School, 2100 Yucca St. ($15-$25, at the door).
