THE WEEK IN PREP SOCCER

- — James Yodice

BOYS: Cibola is off to a quick 2-0 start in District 1-6A with victories this week against the Vistas, Volcano and Piedra. Volcano Vista (1-0 in league) and the Cougars square off Wednesday on the Hawks’ field in an early battle for first place.

Cleveland (1-1) picked up a key win Saturday, 2-0 over Rio Rancho which has lost its first two district games.

In 2-6A, La Cueva has opened 2-0, but the Bears have yet to face the other primary contenders (Sandia, Eldorado, Clovis) in this league.

Eldorado rebounded from a tough overtime loss to Clovis early in the week, with a crucial 2-1 decision over Sandia on Saturday. The Eagles and Matadors are 1-1 in district.

Atrisco Heritage earned two close wins in 4-6A, onegoal victories over Valley and West Mesa. Highland also is 2-0, but like La Cueva, the Hornets opened against the bottom-tier teams in their district.

Valley rebounded from a crushing loss to Atrisco on Tuesday and beat defending state champion Albuquerque High 1-0 on Thursday, and that was without head coach Tyler Linn who had to sit after being red carded in the Atrisco game.

The Vikings and Bulldogs are 1-1 in district.

St. Pius is off to a 1-0 start in 5-5A, but saw a key match Thursday against Valencia postponed because of weather. District 2-5A, which features Del Norte and Albuquerque Academy, begins league play this week.

In District 4-1A/4A, Hope is 1-0-1, in second place just back of Moriarty. In District 5, the great rivalry between Sandia Prep and Bosque School, who hold down the top two slots after the first week, is renewed on Tuesday at Bosque.

GIRLS: Cleveland, the metro champ, started strong in league play Saturday, getting all its goals in the first half as it beat Rio Rancho 4-1 and remained unbeaten at 11-0-1.

Cibola, the 2015 state champion, belted Piedra Vista 6-0 on Saturday in the other 1-6A opener.

As with the boys, La Cueva’s girls had no issues in swatting away Manzano and Santa Fe to begin district play.

Sandia and Eldorado’s scoreless draw Saturday leaves both at 1-0-1 in district. Four of the Matadors’ last five games have gone into overtime.

Albuquerque High won its first two district games this week in 4-6A. Rio Grande, West Mesa, Valley and Atrisco Heritage share second place after the opening week.

St. Pius scored 21 goals last week in wins over Grants and Valencia.

Hope Christian opened District 4-1A/4A play Saturday in Portales. In District 5, leaders Bosque (2-0) and Sandia Prep (1-0) meet Tuesday at Prep.
