Sometimes searching for a job can become a full-time job. Networking, applying for jobs, and interviewing without quick results can often become discouraging. However, do not let that dampen your spirits. Instead take a moment to reflect on your accomplishments and find motivation to keep up the hard work. An important aspect of your job search is recognizing your drive and ambition to get a job. To do that, keep your eye on the prize; remember why you are searching for a job, focus on what you want in a job, and hone in on the skills and assets that you have to achieve that goal.

Know what you want: During a job search, it is important to narrow down all the possible careers and identify which one is best suited for you and your skills. Make a list of potential positions and companies that you are interested in. Consider taking a career assessment, such as one available in the New Mexico Workforce Connection system (www.jobs.state. nm.us). Doing this will narrow down your options and help you to recognize the positions that will be the best match for you. Also, organize all of your work search efforts. Knowing what you want and having it all organized will keep you focused and prepared during your job search.

Set a goal: Create a challenge to complete every day or every week to help you stay motivated during your job search. Whether it is a goal to contact three prospective employers per day or to fill out ten applications per week, remember to challenge and push yourself.

Review and reflect: Think about all the skills and abilities you have acquired during previous jobs, classes, or experiences. Review and reflect upon these accomplishments and make sure they are well noted in your resume and cover letter. Knowing what you have to offer to prospective employers will instill confidence within yourself and ignite your determination to get a job.

Network: Make use of any connections that you have including family, friends, and previous coworkers. Networking is essential in your job search, and may reveal an opportunity that you otherwise may not have been aware of. Reaching out to any potential connections can often result in a new opportunity or even a job offer.

Volunteer: While in pursuit of a job, you may have the chance to explore volunteer and community service opportunities. This will fill in gaps on your resume, expand your skill set, and help your local community at the same time. Plus, serving your community is always inspiring and a great boost.

Use your resources: Locate and visit your local New Mexico Workforce Connection office. Bring a copy of your resume and cover letter, and be prepared to share what type of position you are looking for. Workforce Connection employees are there to help match job seekers to employment opportunities and are equipped with resources and services that could aid in your job search.

Commend yourself: Looking for a job is not easy, but it can be rewarding with every step you take. Remember to be proud of yourself for your hard work and progress. Remind yourself that looking for a job is a huge responsibility that is time consuming and that the most important thing you need to do is to stay motivated and driven in your job search. If you put in a lot of time and effort, remain focused, ambitious, stay positive, and keep your eye on your goal- your hard work will pay off.
