LIFE ADVICE

Deepak Chopra to speak on ‘The Future of Well-being’

- BY ADRIAN GOMEZ JOURNAL ARTS EDITOR

Deepak Chopra has built a career advising the public on how to live better and simplify their lives.

And over the course of his career he has pinpointed five things in his life that help him. Get a good night’s sleep. Take 10,000 steps daily. Do yoga. Pay attention to love, joy and compassion. Eat well. “It’s the combination that works for me,” he says while driving to the airport to catch a flight to Montreal for a speaking engagement.

Chopra will speak on “The Future of Wellbeing” on Monday, Sept. 26, at the University of New Mexico Student Union. He is also on tour for his latest book, “Radical Beauty,” written with celebrity nutritionist Kimberly Snyder.

Chopra is the founder of the Chopra Foundation and co-founder of the Chopra Center for Wellbeing, a world-renowned pioneer in integrative medicine and personal transformation.

Time magazine has described Chopra as “one of the top 100 heroes and icons of the century.”

His latest book focuses on six pillars of healthy living: internal and external nourishment, beauty sleep, primal beauty, movement and spiritual beauty, and offers practical tips, tools, innovative routines, and foods that will allow each person to achieve the highest potential of beauty and health.

He says it’s a fresh take on wellness, health, and self-fulfillment and will help revolutionize how we nourish our bodies to reveal the beauty within.

The book is the 85th of his career, and other books have been translated into more than 43 languages.

“I have to detach myself from the books when they are completed,” he says. “We worked on the most recent book for only just a year. When I met Kimberly, I saw that we had a lot in common and were interested in well-being and beauty. I’d been writing a lot on the future of well-being.”

One of the keys in Chopra’s writing is how to use technology.

“It can be disruptive, and it can be important,” he says. “My attempt is to show how to use technology well for certain things. I’m using virtual reality to give people a profound experience. Technology is the next phase of our evolution. It’s unstoppable. Either we adapt to it or we go extinct.”

In his talk at UNM, Chopra will speak about the role of consciousness and how biology is a projection of every experience.

“It’s very exciting,” he says. “I’ve been talking for a few years now and we have the research to back it up.”
