Poetry event seeks to ‘inspire positive change’

The style and rhythm will differ with each piece.

But the words will be filled with purpose, which cuts through and sparks conversation.

The Resolana Poetry, on Friday, Sept. 30, is in response to many of the tragic events, acts of violence and racism, and instances of ugly demagoguery that have troubled not only the local community, but our nation and world this year.

“Our community, our nation and our world are at a crossroads,” says Bill Nevins, a poet and organizer. “We want to spread awareness and response with our words in order to inspire positive change in our world, but we must first start with our community.”

At the resolana, Nevins will be joined by current Albuquerque Poet Laureate Manuel González, as well as the previous poet laureates, Hakim Bellamy and Jessica Helen Lopez.

Nevins says this is the fourth event of the series.

He says with recent bombings in New York City and the killing of more African-Americans by police officers, the poetry is needed now more than ever.

“It all starts in the community,” he says. “These conversations have to keep going in order for change to be made. It’s an important outlet. Poets can stretch their thoughts and emotions without running for anything. They are speaking their minds.”

Nevins is grateful to have talented performers in Albuquerque.

“This is a good problem Albuquerque has,” he says. “We’ve got a lot of creative people who enjoy poetry and will get up and perform.”

Also joining in will be Mercedez Holtry, John Roche, Rich Boucher, Larry Goodell, Matthew Brown, Ebony Isis Booth, Robert Warren, Lisa Alvarado, Zachary Kluckman, Katrina Guarascio, Sarita Sol González, Jesus Lucero, Jill Batson, Generation Justice, Marcial Delgado, Larry Goodell, Kevin Kirby, Tlacaelel Fuentes, Beatlick Sisters and Ken Bagnuli.
