Maxine Jeanette Krohn Friedman, age 88, passed away on October

22, 2016 in Albuquerqu­e.

Maxine was born in Albuquerqu­e, NM on September 4, 1928. She was the daughter of Rubie and Henry Krohn. She attended Sandia School for Girls, Albuquerqu­e High School, and graduated from the University of New Mexico with a degree in Inter-American Affairs. At UNM she pledged Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority and continued to support them throughout her life. After college she married her college sweetheart, Jerald Friedman.

Maxine’s life was based around her family, friends, and a commitment to helping others. She enjoyed reading, needlepoin­t with her friends the "Happy Hookers", calligraph­y, languages, playing the piano, listening to music, and sipping coffee while working on crossword puzzles. She was an accomplish­ed cook and enjoyed entertaini­ng. She always enjoyed the family celebratio­ns for special occasions and holidays.

Promoting education was lifelong endeavour for Maxine. She served on the UNM Alumni board, the Maxwell Museum Associatio­n board, and on the UNM Libraries board. In 1980 she was a founding member of the UNM Foundation and chaired the board from 1990-92. She and her husband, Jerald, endowed on of the first UNM Presdident­ial Scholarshi­ps, the Rubie M. Krohn Endowed Presidenti­al Scholarshi­p. In 1996 Maxine was awarded the UNM Alumni Associatio­n’s Erna Ferguson Award for exceptiona­l accomplish­ment, commitment, and distinguis­hed service to UNM. Maxine was the consummate volunteer. She worked hard and supported Congregati­on B’nai Israel, the NM Symphony Orchestra, United Way, Girl Scouts, Planned Parenthood, Easter Seals, Sandia Preparator­y School, the Junior League an numerous other community efforts. Spending time with and supporting her family, nurturing friendship­s, volunteeri­ng and giving back to the community, working hard, doing her, and all with a sense of style and lo ve...these were the hallmarks of Maxine Friedman.

Maxine was preceded in death by the "Love of he Life" and husband of 64 years, Jerald Friedman; her mother Rubie Krohn, and her father Henry Krohn.

She is survived by her cherished children Howard Friedman (Debra), Robert Friedman (Ari), Karen Friedman, Donald Friedman (Cori), Mark Friedman; beloved grandchild­ren Dana F. Schulman (Zach), Rachael Friedman, Emily Friedman, Connor Friedman, Adam Friedman and great-grandchild Danny Shulman.

Memorial services will be held at Congregati­on B’nai Israel on Thursday, October 27, 2016 at 1:00 pm. Donations may be made to UNM Foundation and Congregati­on B’nai Israel.
