TOO BAD THERE’S no “mercy rule” for the Aggie Bowl” NMSU-TEXAS A&M. NMSU will need it. — MHD

KUDOS TO THE Journal Sports staff. Tuesday’s Sports Section was outstanding — great pre-(World Series) stories, excellent NFL coverage, an in-depth look at the upcoming NBA season plus stories about two class acts — Marvin Menzies at UNLV and Arian Foster ending his career with respect for the game. Added Bonus — Mark Smith’s column was a classic. 8 packed pages — Thank you and keep it up!

AS LONG AS people hold this Lobo Football team accountable for things that happened last year, as well as 30 years ago, we will have what we saw Saturday against ULM; a half full stadium. These young men deserve more. UNM is competitive and has a chance to win virtually every game it plays. They are the #1 rushing team in the nation and fun to watch. Why some people are allowed to sound off negatively is beyond me . ... If you don’t want to go to the game just say so, the excuses are pathetic.

CBS SPORTS’ Bottom 20 has Rutgers, NMSU and LA Monroe all in it. The people saying the lobos are trying to get back to a meaningless bowl game makes a lot of sense. I also miss Rocky Long and all the NM kids he recruited.

NM NATIVE ABQ: FYI UTEP is 2-5 with (one) win coming against NMSU. Both the Lobos and Aggies are a joke in football just like the high school football in New Mexico.

— Bob Berding

WE CAN’T EVEN get the game from Hawaii on pay-per-view? What’s up with that? Too bad that the fans aren’t as intense as they used to be. I guess President Frank and Governor Martinez won’t be called upon to assist? I guess it is Lobo football, not basketball. …

FANS THAT ARE saying the Lobos can’t beat Valley High … are pushing the envelope. Valley is not that good, but Del Norte and West Mesa High (have) Bob Davie shaking in his boots.
