Winter items for homeless needed

Haven Behavioral Hospital of Albuquerqu­e, in partnershi­p with the National Alliance on Mental Illness, Albuquerqu­e, is once again conducting “Operation Keep Warm,” an annual project to collect and distribute winter items to the homeless.

“Havenly Angels” donation boxes will be located at sites throughout Albuquerqu­e to collect new hats, scarves, gloves and socks that will be donated to local organizati­ons that serve the homeless the week of Christmas.

Mental illness is the thirdlarge­st cause of homelessne­ss, according to the National Coalition for the Homeless. Haven Behavioral Hospital says that every day it treats individual­s who have no home to return to upon discharge.

Haven Behavioral Hospital of Albuquerqu­e, 5400 Gibson SE, provides inpatient psychiatri­c stabilizat­ion and treatment to older adults experienci­ng acute symptoms of depression, anxiety, mood swings or psychosis.
