FOOTBALL
HORSEMEN FALL: It was not a good outing for St. Michael’s, as the depleted Horsemen fell 38-0 to Portales in the Class 4A semifinals on Saturday. Without its top player on both sides of the ball, Xavier Vigil, as well as a number of other key players missing, No. 6 St. Mike’s (9-4) was no match for the second-seeded Rams.
BASKETBALL
MISSING COACH: Controversial Española Valley boys coach Richard Martinez was absent as the Sundevils began defense of their Class 5A state championship Friday with a 66-60 win over Gallup. Amid charges of abuse to players and students, the embattled Martinez was fired shortly after his squad won the state championship in March, only to be reinstated shortly thereafter. But he still has a Public Education Department investigation hanging over his head.
TOURNEY CANCELLED: The Desert Academy High Desert Classic Tournament has been cancelled because of leaks at the Genoveva Chavez Community Center.
