Drawn to a dream

Sueño Flamenco aims to pull audience into dancers’ world

- BY ADRIAN GOMEZ JOURNAL ARTS EDITOR

Flamenco has a way of drawing an audience in.

Adriana Maresma Fois can’t explain it, but she’s one who has been drawn in.

The dancer splits her time between the Duke City and Spain, where she still enjoys dancing after decades.

“There’s a reaction that pulls an audience in when they watch flamenco,” she says. “I’m inviting people to dream this dream of emotions with me. Letting people into our own little world. For me, it’s been living a dream for 25 years. And I’m still dreaming it.”

Maresma Fois is the owner of MFlamenco Dance Company , based in Spain.

The night will feature Maresma Fois, Patricia Nuñez — “La Tiranta” — and Ricardo Díaz, and Fabían Sisneros. “There will be a special appearance from the Public Academy of Performing Arts Flamenco Troupe,” she says. “Fabían teaches flamenco at the school, and we’re giving them an opportunity to get onstage and perform for an audience.”

The dances will highlight innovative and traditional styles such as alegrías, bulerías and taranto.

There are eight numbers in the entire performance, which runs about 90 minutes.

“The group from PAPA will perform,” she says. “Then me and Fabían will have some solo numbers.”

Sisneros is excited to be part of this event because his students get to perform.

“It’s a life-changing experience for them,” Sisneros says. “You can’t give the same experience in a classroom. They are going to be dancing full numbers. The common thread among all the artists is that they all speak flamenco and have a passion for the art form. It’s special.”
