Davie is ‘cautious’ about midyear recruits

-

enroll in January and could get a head start by taking part in spring practice.

But Davie said he might not want to sign that many.

“We’re really, really cautious,” he said. “I don’t know if that’s the right word, but we’re really careful just to take the right guys.

“We have enough numbers now. We need players who can help us.”

Having midyear transfers can be more or less important, Davie said, depending on the positions they play.

“I think it’s important to have defensive backs in early just because of all the checks and all the X’s and O’s,” he said. “I think it’s important to get offensive linemen in early. I do think we’re in the market for a (junior-college) quarterback.”

Junior college players reported to be visiting this week include:

Jordan Ta’amu, a 6-foot-3,

■ 200-pound quarterback from New Mexico Military Institute.

Willie Hobdy, a 6-2, 184-pound

■ cornerback from Coffeyville (Kan.) Community College.

Michael Sewell Jr., a 6-1,

■ 205-pound safety from Los Angeles Valley College.

Blake Yager, a 6-5, 300-pound

■ offensive tackle from Iowa Western CC in Council Bluffs.

Ta’amu ranked second in the National Junior College Athletic Association in passing yardage per game (334.9) this season. He threw for 32 touchdowns. Ta’amu has a scholarship offer from Southern Mississippi and is being recruited by Minnesota.

Hobdy had 44 tackles, three interceptions and seven pass breakups for Coffeyville this

season.

Sewell had 28 tackles, four interceptions and four breakups for LA Valley.

INJURY UPDATE: Davie said he expects sophomore running back Tyrone Owens (foot) to be ready for UNM’s bowl game, whenever and wherever that is. He’s optimistic that senior nose guard William Udeh (knee) will be available as well.

“I think T.O. is gonna be fine,” Davie said. “Udeh was out here and did some things (Saturday). He’s got a chance.”

Owens and Udeh sat out the Lobos’ 55-36 victory over Wyoming on Nov. 26 after suffering injures during UNM’s 48-31 loss at Colorado State the previous week.
