WINTER WARM-UP

Santa Fe event features 18 brewers from around New Mexico

- BY ROZANNA M. MARTINEZ

WinterBrew might be a few weeks away, but start planning now, because this New Mexico Brewers Guild event sells out each year.

This year’s WinterBrew is the largest to date and features 18 New Mexico breweries, according to New Mexico Brewers Guild Executive Director John Gozigian.

“It’s a continuation of what we’ve done, except we have more breweries than we’ve ever had,” he said. “This year, we have 18 breweries participating, and they’re coming from all over. We have new breweries participating this year.”

Newcomers to the event are Albuquerque’s Bow & Arrow Brewing Co. and Sidetrack Brewing Co., Carlsbad’s Milton’s Brewing and Santa Fe’s Rowley Farmhouse Ales and Chili Line Brewing Co., according to Gozigian.

Returning participants are Abbey Brewing, Bathtub Row Brewing Co-op, Blue Corn Brewery, Bosque Brewing Co., Bow & Arrow Brewing Co., Boxing Bear Brewing Co., La Cumbre Brewing Co., Rio Bravo Brewing Co., Santa Fe Brewing Co., Second Street Brewing, Three Rivers Brewing, Tractor Brewing Co., and Turtle Mountain Brewing Co.

“It’s going to be good,” Gozigian said of this year’s WinterBrew. “… It is a pretty good representation. Most of the brewers you expect to be there, will be there too, but it will be nice to have a lot of new blood this year.”

The format is the same. The general admission ticket price gets you a commemorative logo glass for tasting and a full pint. Eventgoers will be able to taste the various beers offered by different breweries at the event as well as get a full pint of a beer of their choosing.

“We’re going to do a nonic pint, that’s like a classic pint glass,” Gozigian said. “It tapers up and out a little bit, and it’s got that kind of bulge at the top. … A lot of beer drinkers like those glasses. There’s kind of been some backlash against the old shaker-style pint glass, so we don’t really use those anymore.”

All that beer tasting can drum up an appetite. Blue Corn Brewery, Second Street Brewing and Pizzeria da Lino have you covered with various tasty food offerings. Fill your stomach and later relax at the Santa Fe Sage Inn, which is offering rooms at a discounted rate, exclusively for WinterBrew. Sage Inn is offering a room with two queen beds or a room with a kingsize bed for $68 or a suite for $99 to accommodate WinterBrew guests. Sage Inn is a reasonable walking distance from the WinterBrew event. Reserve your room by calling 505-982-5952; mention WinterBrew to get this special rate.
