Mountainee­rs romp; Aztecs cruise in Hawaii

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — West Virginia coach Bob Huggins wanted to see some improvemen­t from his team after a sloppy performanc­e against Radford. He had to wait a while. Tarik Phillip scored 16 points and the 11th-ranked Mountainee­rs pulled away from Northern Kentucky for a 92-61 victory Friday.

West Virginia shot 52 percent from the field, overcoming a slow start on the way to its seventh straight win. Teyvon Myers had 13 points, Esa Ahmad scored 12 and Jevon Carter finished with 11.

The Mountainee­rs (11-1) got outscored in the second half of an 84-57 win against the Highlander­s on Tuesday. Then Northern Kentucky jumped to a 12-4 lead early in the first half.

“We got to stop hurting ourselves,” Huggins said. “We just didn’t play very well in the first half and I think they were a lot better than our guys thought they were.”

Carson Williams led Northern Kentucky (9-4) with 12 points. (14) WISCONSIN 90, FLORIDA A&M 37: In Madison, Wis., reserve D’Mitrik Trice scored 14 points and Vitto Brown added 11 and eight rebounds as Wisconsin breezed past Florida A&M.

The game came after an eight-day layoff for the Badgers (11-2) as they finished final exams.

They led Florida A&M (2-11) by 10 points 5 minutes into the game, pushed the lead to 20 with less than 4 minutes to go in the half and had it up to 38 midway through the second half before coach Greg Gard pulled all of his starters. (23) SOUTHERN CAL 94, WYOMING

92 (OT): In Las Vegas, Nev., Jordan McLaughlin hit a driving layup with four seconds left to lift the Trojans (13-0) to a win over the Cowboys (10-3) in the Continenta­l Tire Las Vegas Classic. SAN DIEGO STATE 82, TULSA 63: At the Diamond Head Classic in Honolulu, Jeremy Hemsley scored 20 points that included three 3-pointers during a flurry of seven straight treys to break the game open for the Aztecs. San Diego State faces San Francisco for the championsh­ip Sunday.

SDSU (7-4) came in averaging 33 percent from the arc but made 13 of 32 for 41 percent against Tulsa.

Kell scored 19 points and Zylan Cheatham added 15 points. Junior Etou scored 18 points for the Golden Hurricane (6-5).
