Butler halts Villanova’s winning streak at 20

INDIANAPOL­IS — Kethan Savage scored five of his 13 points during a decisive seven-point run to give No. 18 Butler a 66-58 victory over No. 1 Villanova on Wednesday night, ending the Wildcats’ 20-game winning streak.

Butler (13-2, 2-1 Big East) improved to 4-0 against ranked opponents this season and extended its home winning streak to 12 games, beating a top-ranked team for the second time in school history.

The Bulldogs did it by upending the defending national champions and stopping the longest winning streak in Villanova history.

Jalen Brunson had 23 points and Josh Hart scored 13 on a rugged shooting night for the Wildcats (14-1, 2-1), beaten for the first time since a 69-67 loss to Seton Hall in the Big East championsh­ip game last March.

“We beat an unbelievab­le program and an unbelievab­le team,” Butler coach Chris Holtmann said. “Our kids performed at a high level.”

(2) BAYLOR 65, IOWA STATE 63: In Waco, Texas Manu Lecomte made a short high-arching jumper with 8 seconds left and the Bears (14-0, 2-0 Big 12) beat the Cyclones (9-4, 1-1).

(8) DUKE 110, GEORGIA TECH 57: In Durham, N.C., Grayson Allen had 15 points and seven assists in his return from a one-game suspension for tripping an opponent, and the Blue Devils (13-2, 1-1 ACC) routed the Yellow Jackets (9-5, 1-1) in coach Mike Krzyzewski’s final game before leaving the team to have back surgery. (23) NOTRE DAME 77, (9) LOUISVILLE 70: In South Bend, Ind., Steve Vasturia scored a career-high 24 points to lead the Irish (13-2, 2-0 ACC) to an upset of the Cardinals (12-3, 0-2). (10) CREIGHTON 85, ST. JOHN’S 72: In New York, freshman 7-footer Justin Patton scored 25 points as the Bluejays (14-1, 2-1 Big East) snapped a three-game winning streak by the Red Storm (8-8, 2-1).

PITT 88, (11) VIRGINIA 76 (OT): In Pittsburgh, Jamel Artis scored 24 points and Sheldon Jeter hit a pair of 3-pointers in overtime to lift the Panthers (12-3, 1-1 ACC) over the Cavaliers (11-3, 1-2).

(15) OREGON 83, WASHINGTON 61: In Seattle, Tyler Dorsey made eight 3-pointers and finished with 28 points, and the Ducks (14-2, 3-0 Pac-12) overcame foul trouble to pull away in the second half for a win over the Huskies (7-7, 0-2).

N.C. STATE 104, (21) VIRGINIA TECH 78: In Raleigh, N.C., freshman guard Dennis Smith Jr. had 27 points, 11 assists and 11 rebounds for the second triple-double in program history, and the Wolfpack (12-3, 1-1 ACC) dominated the Hokies (12-2, 1-1).

COLORADO STATE 76, SAN JOSE STATE 71: In San Jose, Calif., Prentiss Nixon and J.D. Paige each scored 18 for the Rams (10-6, 2-1). The Spartans (7-6, 0-2) got 24 points from Brandon Clarke.

FRESNO STATE 85, WYOMING 70: In Fresno, Calif., Paul Watson scored 25 points to lead the Bulldogs (10-5, 2-1) past the Cowboys (11-5, 1-2).

EASTERN NM 78, WESTERN NM 71: In Silver City, the Greyhounds (7-8, 1-4) snapped a 10-game Lone Star losing streak by beating the Mustangs (2-11, 0-5) on Tuesday night. Joe Clarke scored 22 points for ENMU while Eddie Giron contribute­d 15 points for WNMU.
