A bright beginning

Guitarist, songwriter, Harlem Globetrotters game on tap

- ADRIAN GOMEZ

Music has never felt like work for Andy McKee.

The guitarist fell in love with music while he was growing up in Albuquerque and Rio Rancho.

“My mom worked for Santa Fe railroad company,” he says. “I was about 9 years old and lived in both Albuquerque and Rio Rancho. It really had an impact on me, and I enjoy coming back for performances. It’s a sort of homecoming.”

McKee will perform at the South Broadway Cultural Center on Thursday, Jan. 12.

The guitarist rose to fame after posting his videos on YouTube.

He amassed a whopping 55 million-plus views for his videos.

“I took a chance to get my music heard,” he says. “If I had given up, I wouldn’t be here. Now I’m traveling around the world and performing. It’s amazing to see how music really does connect people.”

The holidays are over, and the new year is starting off with plenty of bright spots.

One of those is pop-folk singer Dar Williams, who performs at the South Broadway Cultural Center on Saturday, Jan. 7.

Williams’ rise began in the 1990s with some solid albums that were critically lauded. Since then, she’s continued to be a force in the folk arena, and she’s now writing a book. To read more, see Page 22.

And tonight at WisePies Arena, the legendary Harlem Globetrotters will play a game. I caught up with Cheese Chisolm, who is in his seventh year as a Globetrotter. His story is one of positivity. See Page 24, to read more.

Of course, the movie season is still hot. We’ve got reviews of “Hidden Figures” and “A Monster Calls” beginning on
