Rams make youngster McVay head coach

-

LOS ANGELES — The Los Angeles Rams have made Sean McVay the youngest head coach in NFL history.

The Rams on Thursday hired McVay, who turns 31 years old on Jan. 24.

McVay spent the past three seasons as the Washington Redskins’ offensive coordinator. He has been an assistant since 2010 in Washington, where he worked with head coach Jay Gruden to build a prolific offense led by quarterback Kirk Cousins.

“Really happy for Sean McVay!” Cousins tweeted.

McVay replaces Jeff Fisher, who was fired 13 games into the Rams’ homecoming season in Los Angeles, and interim head coach John Fassel. The Rams finished 4-12 in their 13th consecutive non-winning season.

The Rams made the eye-catching move on the same day that the Chargers announced their relocation to Los Angeles to share the Rams’ $2.6 billion stadium. The Chargers are still without a coach, but the Rams grabbed headlines with one of the most interesting names on the coaching market.

McVay wowed the Rams’ top brass during two recent interviews, but he is an unorthodox choice for the franchise, which hasn’t taken many extraordinary risks during owner Stan Kroenke’s tenure. McVay is respected as an upand-coming NFL mind but has meager experience, including none as a head coach.

PACKERS: Wide receiver Jeff Janis’ absence from practice was short-lived, linebacker Julius Peppers was back in action and cornerback Quinten Rollins took another step toward being cleared from the concussion protocol.

The Packers were still missing four players from their Thursday padded practice: receiver Jordy Nelson (ribs), center JC Tretter (knee), running back James Starks (concussion) and linebacker Jayrone Elliott (hand).

PORTER: A Pennsylvania district attorney says he’ll drop all but two minor charges against Pittsburgh Steelers assistant coach Joey Porter after reviewing video of his altercation with a bar bouncer and a police officer.

District Attorney Stephen Zappala Jr. says the video evidence supports only summary citations for disorderly conduct and public drunkenness.

JAGUARS: Tom Coughlin’s introductory news conference on Thursday started five minutes sooner than initially scheduled, a you’re-early-oryou’re-late staple of his coaching career. Owner Shad Khan also said Coughlin will have final say on all football decisions, including the draft, free agency, other roster moves and the hiring of assistant coaches.

DOLPHINS: Matt Burke, the Dolphins’ linebackers coach this season, was promoted Thursday as the replacement for Vance Joseph , who left to become head coach of the Denver Broncos.

RAVENS: Richard Angulo, a Sandia High alumnus who played at Western New Mexico, has been promoted from tight ends coach to assistant offensive line coach.

BENGALS: An Ohio prosecutor deciding how to proceed after Adam “Pacman” Jones’ latest arrest says he wants to know first what punishment Jones faces from the NFL.

“I want to know what the NFL is going to do,” Hamilton County Prosecutor Joe Deters told WKRC-TV. Deters said he’s asking “what is the normal” for a player with multiple offenses and who’s previously been suspended.
