Bryce leads Bruins past Buffs

La Cueva grad has 37 and 9 3-pointers

BOULDER, COLO. — La Cueva High graduate Bryce Alford scored a career-high 37 points, hitting nine of UCLA’s 19 3-pointers, and the fourthrank­ed Bruins beat Colorado 104-89 on Thursday night.

It was the most 3-pointers for the Bruins (17-1, 4-1 Pac-12) this season, surpassing the previous mark of 18 in the season opener against Pacific.

Alford was 11 of 18 from the field, including 9 of 14 from 3-point range. He was pushed farther and farther out by the Buffaloes defense, but kept hitting deeper and deeper shots. Alford’s previous best was 31 points against Oregon on Feb. 27, 2014.

(5) GONZAGA 93, LOYOLA MARYMOUNT 55: In Spokane, Wash., Przemek Karnowski scored 17 points as Gonzaga beat Loyola Marymount to remain the nation’s only undefeated Division I basketball team.

Zach Collins scored 15 points and Silas Melson added 13 for Gonzaga (16-0, 4-0 West Coast), which has the nation’s longest winning streak at 16 games. (16) ARIZONA 91, ARIZONA

ST. 75: In Tucson, Ariz., Lauri Markkanen scored a careerhigh 30 points and Kadeem Allen added 18 for Arizona.

The Wildcats (16-2, 5-0 Pac12) scored the game’s first 12 points. Dusan Ristic scored 16 points and Markkanen made 4 of 7 from 3-point range.

Obinna Oleka had 22 points for the Sun Devils (9-9, 2-3).

IOWA 83, (17) PURDUE 78: In Iowa City, Iowa, Peter Jok scored 29 points with eight assists and six rebounds and Iowa rallied from a nine-point halftime deficit.

Freshman Tyler Cook had 16 points for the Hawkeyes (11-7, 3-2 Big Ten), who beat a ranked team at home for the second time this season. Caleb Swanigan, who led Purdue (14-4, 3-2) with 17 points, missed a layup in front of the rim with 13.8 seconds left and the Boilermake­rs down 79-78.

(18) WISCONSIN 89, OHIO ST. 66: In Madison, Wis., Bronson Koenig scored 21 points as Wisconsin recovered from a poor shooting performanc­e four days

earlier.

Wisconsin (14-3, 3-1 Big Ten) shot 39 percent from the field on Sunday, including just 2 of 14 from 3-point range, as Purdue snapped the Badgers’ ninegame winning streak.

Wisconsin had no such troubles with the Buckeyes (10-7, 0-4). The Badgers shot 49 percent from the field, including a season-best 55 percent from the 3-point line.

JaQuan Lyle led the Buckeyes with 13 points. (20) NOTRE DAME 67, MIAMI

62: In Coral Gables, Fla., V.J. Beachem sank the go-ahead basket and made the clinching steal as Notre Dame rallied from a four-point deficit in the final 2½ minutes.

The Fighting Irish (15-2, 4-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) outscored Miami 10-1 down the stretch to earn their sixth straight victory. Miami (11-4, 1-2) had its 21-game home winning streak snapped.

(22) CINCINNATI 66, SMU 64: In Cincinnati, Troy Caupain scored 16 points and blunted SMU’s comeback.

The Bearcats (14-2, 4-0) won a matchup of the last two unbeaten teams in American Athletic Conference play, taking their seventh straight game overall. Gary Clark led Cincinnati with 18 points, including two 3s that matched his career high.

SMU (14-4, 4-1) lost its 10-game winning streak, which tied for third-longest in school history. Sterling Brown led the Mustangs with a season-high 20 points and 11 rebounds, but missed a 3-point shot that would have given the Mustangs the lead with 10 seconds left.

UTAH 86, (25) USC 64: In Salt Lake City, Devon Daniels scored 17 points and Utah earned its first win against a ranked team this season.

Utah fell behind 10-0, then dominated the rest of the first half to take a 44-31 lead.

Daniels finished two points shy of his career high, and David Collette and Lorenzo Bonam added 15 apiece for the Utes.

State men

CAMERON (Okla.) 78, ENMU 66: In Portales, the Aggies (11-6, 4-3 Lone Star) went on a 22-8 run

in the middle of the second half in a win over the Greyhounds (7-9, 1-5). Joe Clarke led Eastern with 13 points. MIDWESTERN ST. 94, WNMU

59: In Silver City, Midwestern State (11-4, 4-3) had 30 fastbreak points and shot 55 percent from the floor to down WNMU (2-12, 0-6) in the Lone Star Conference.

Women’s Top 25

(5) SOUTH CAROLINA 66, GEORGIA 63: In Columbia, S.C., Bianca Cuevas-Moore had a career-high 25 points and the Gamecocks (14-1, 4-0 SEC) held off the Bulldogs (10-7. 2-2).

Alaina Coates added her 52nd career double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds for the Gamecocks. No doubt South Carolina missed Wilson, the 6-foot-5 scoring leader who sprained her right ankle at Florida on Sunday and wore a pink cast as she walked on crutches to the sideline.

(6) NOTRE DAME 86, PITTSBURGH 54: In South Bend, Ind., Arike Ogunbowale matched her career high with five 3-pointers and scored 19 points to help the Irish (16-2, 4-1 ACC) rout the Panthers (10-7, 1-3).

(7) FLORIDA STATE 72, (9) LOUISVILLE 65: In Tallahasse­e, Fla., Shakayla Thomas scored four of her 24 points during a key fourth-period run and the Seminoles (16-2, 4-1 ACC) beat the Cardinals (15-4, 3-2).

(12) DUKE 70, NORTH CAROLINA 58: In Durham, N.C., Leaonna Odom scored 15 points and the Blue Devils (15-2, 3-1 ACC) beat the Tar Heels (12-5, 1-3).

State women

NMSU 81, GCU 65: In Phoenix, Brooke Salas put up a careerhigh 23 points while Moriah Mack added 18 and the Aggies (11-6, 3-0) remained unbeaten in the Western Athletic Conference. GCU is 9-6, 1-1.

ENMU 84, CAMERON 76: In Portales, sophomore Brandi Gomez, a Clovis grad who transferre­d from Cameron, scored a career-best 20 points as the Greyhounds (11-3, 7-0 Lone Star) beat the Aggies (4-9, 2-5) in front of 2,336 fans on Youth Day. MIDWESTERN ST. 71, WNMU

46: In Silver City, Midwestern State (4-9, 1-6) held the Mustangs (4-10, 0-7) to 27 percent from the floor in keeping the host team winless in the Lone Star Conference.
