6-7 Piedra Vista lineman commits to New Mexico
Dylan Weaver, a 6-foot-7, 270-pound offensive lineman from Piedra Vista High School in Farmington, has committed to attend the University of New Mexico on scholarship.
Weaver’s commitment was first reported by NMpreps.com.
Weaver had committed to Texas Tech in June but withdrew his commitment after the 2016 season, most of which he missed with a knee injury. According to nmprep.com, he also had offers from Georgia State, San Diego State and Montana.
UNM offered Weaver a scholarship before his initial commitment to Texas Tech.
“I’m excited that I got another chance to play for the Lobos,” Weaver told NMPreps. com. “I’ve wanted to play there since I was a child.”
Weaver is the first 2017 New Mexico high school graduate to accept a scholarship toward UNM’s 2017 signing class. Cleveland wide receiver Marcus Williams, a 2016 graduate who signed with UNM last February, sat out last season as a “grayshirt” and will become a member of the 2017 class.
In the past few days, Clovis running back Micah Gray, St. Michael’s running back/linebacker Xavier Vigil, Sandia tight end Jacob Barnhill and Del Norte offensive lineman Austin Barnes have accepted invitations from UNM to enter the program as preferred walk-ons.
Weaver’s commitment gives UNM 13 players who have either signed or committed toward its limit of 25 toward its 2017 signing class.
The signees, all except for Williams, are mid-year junior college transfers. They are:
Sammy Benard, offensive lineman, Northeast Oklahoma A&M, 6-foot-5, 280 pounds.
Jermane Conyers, defensive lineman, Dodge City (Kan). Community College, 6-3, 330.
