Orland B. (Barney) Thorpe Jr. was born to O.B. and Josephine (Helmly) Thorpe in Savannah, GA on August 16, 1924, moved to Albuquerqu­e in

1935 and passed away on January 22, 2017.

He was preceded in death by his parents and by his wife of 60 years, Mary Whitenell Thorpe.

He is survived by his children, Susan (Jake) Gaultney, John (Cheryl) Thorpe, Dan (Sharon) Thorpe, Tom (Jackie) Thorpe; ten grandchild­ren; and ten great-grandchild­ren.

Barney graduated from Albuquerqu­e High School in 1942 and the University of New Mexico in 1948 with a B.S in Civil Engineerin­g. He was an officer in the U.S. Navy and the Naval Reserve. He worked in Albuquerqu­e in the discipline­s of both Civil and Structural Engineerin­g until his retirement in 1989. He was a Fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineerin­g and a past president of the N.M. Section, active member and past president of the N.M. Consulting Engineers Council as well as a member of the National Society of Profession­al Engineers. As a life-long member of the Monte Vista Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), he was active in many positions in the church. He was an avid hunter, fisherman and outdoorsma­n. Barney dearly loved his family and was proud of each of them and their activities and accomplish­ments.

Memorial services will be held on Thursday, February 2, 2017, 10:30 a.m. at the Monte Vista Christian Church, 3501 Campus Blvd NE. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his honor to the Monte Vista Christian Church. Please visit out online guestbook for Barney at www.FrenchFune­rals.com.
