Trump has made the Journal cower
Your Feb. 10 editorial “Why is Council picking a fight with Washington?” is shameful. Your last two sentences portray a fundamental cowardice: “Before the Feb. 22 meeting, councilors need to ask themselves who really benefits if they weigh in on federal immigration policy. And who loses.”
In 1930s Germany, those Germans who were not targeted by that government turned a blind eye to that government’s abhorrent policies regarding the Romani community, the mentally disabled, the LGTBQ community, the unions, the Jewish community. Oh, and the media.
According to your editorial board, we shouldn’t support our immigrant community on Feb. 22 because the Trump administration might punish Albuquerque. Really? What happens in a few months if the Trump administration decides that, because of the threat of terrorism, American Muslims are mandated to register with the government? Will the Albuquerque Journal flinch again? And what will the Journal say as hate crimes against our Jewish, LGBTQ and Muslim neighbors continue to rise? Nothing?
You ask: who loses? I say, on behalf of Defend Our Neighbors, that our entire community ultimately loses. If our major newspaper cannot find within itself the courage to stand up for every member of our community, then the Journal loses. After this editorial, I believe the Journal has already lost its moral authority . ... JOHN ROSS
