Palenke Soultribe brings its electronic Afro-Colombian sounds

- BY ADRIAN GOMEZ

Juan Diego Borda is looking forward to playing his first show of 2017. And it will be at the National Hispanic Cultural Center tonight. “We’ve been mostly doing studio work,” he says during a recent interview from Los Angeles. “We’re excited to be back on stage. It does feel a little strange because we took a short pause from touring.”

Borda is a member of the electronic music group Palenke Soultribe.

The outfit is known for fusing electronic music with Afro-Colombian rhythms and melodies. The band’s sound draws on deep Colombian roots, while infusing the vibrant beats of today’s flourishing alt.Latino scene.

Palenke Soultribe, aka PST, has claimed a spot in the Latin alternative music world by putting on energetic shows, releasing musically interesting albums and remixes and always pushing the envelope visually and conceptually.

“On stage is where we come alive,” he says. “It’s the one place where we feel at home and want to invite people in.”

The group was formed in Colombia in 2005 but is now based in Los Angeles.

Palenke Soultribe has released four full-length albums to date. The most recent is 2015’s “Sangre.”

Borda says fans won’t have to wait long for the next album.

He says it will be released later this year.

“We’re in the process of making the deals to promote it and put out videos,” he says. “All the business side of it is happening now. It’s been a couple years since the last album, and we want to get new music out there.”

When it comes to new music, Borda says he and Andres Erazo collaborate together.

And the inspiration comes from everywhere.

“A lot of it comes from sounds first and then a sentence or word will trigger and idea,” he says. “Then it’s working out the rest of the song. We put plenty of ideas together to make the songs better.”
