SPORTS SPEAK UP!

IT WAS ENTERTAINING to watch the electrifying slam-dunk contest during the NBA’s all-star weekend. I was wondering if the WNBA will be having a layup contest during its allstar weekend? — Uptown Ed See more Speak Ups!

LOBO BASEBALL good job opening the season with a sweep. You are definitely the pride of UNM. — NM Native

HIGH SCHOOLER Lemelo Ball recently scored 92 points, amazing. Lisa Leslie in high school scored 105 (101 officially) in one half, and was stopped there when the opposing team defaulted at half-time. George Maes, Santa Cruz High Crusader (Española), scored 81 points (39 field goals, 3 free throws), a New Mexico record that has stood for (almost) 53 years. He also did that without the three-point rule. By all accounts many of his shots that night were long range. He may have easily scored 90 plus points with the 3-point shot. — Vince Guillen

LACK OF ATTENDANCE at UNM sporting events (is for) two reasons. The MWC is horrible in football, hands down the worst conference in the country, and basketball went from a good mid-major to a low D1 conference. No one is excited to see the likes of San Jose State, Hawaii or CSU. The other reason is lack of local kids getting scholarships. Lots of fans have spoken out about it and are boycotting. Some people try to call it inane or dismiss it but lack of locals and good competition equals empty Lobo stadiums/arenas. — Alfred Archibeque

WE HAVE been season ticket holder since 1967 and wonder what happened to longtime fan known as ‘Snake’? — C&R

FROM AN elementary public school teacher and a UNM Lobo basketball fan: It is time for Coach Neal to change the pronouns he uses during interviews. Please use OUR team, OUR players, and OUR boys instead of “MY team”, “MY players”, and “My boys”. In doing so the rest of the coaching staff as well as the players will feel included. — Jan
