Gonzaga crushes San Diego

No. 1 team wins by 58 points for 29th straight

SAN DIEGO — Josh Perkins and Jordan Mathews scored 15 points apiece, and Johnathan Williams had 14 points and 19 rebounds for No. 1 Gonzaga, which overwhelme­d San Diego 96-38 on Thursday night to improve to 29-0 and clinch the West Coast Conference title.

The 58-point victory margin was the biggest of the season for Gonzaga, which also has won games by 47, 46 and 39 points.

And it was merely the latest laugher for Gonzaga (17-0 WCC), the only unbeaten team in Division I. It has won all 17 conference games by double digits.

Olin Carter III scored 15 for USD (12-17, 5-12), which has lost six straight and 39 of its last 42 games to Gonzaga.

(4) ARIZONA 90, USC 77: In Tucson, Allonzo Trier scored a season-high 25 points, including four 3-pointers, and Arizona remained alone atop the Pac-12 standings.

Rawle Alkins added 12 points and Lauri Markkanen had 11 for the Wildcats (26-3, 15-1) in Arizona’s 21st consecutiv­e home win.

Bennie Boatwright scored 23 points for the Trojans (22-7, 8-7).

(5) UCLA 87, ARIZONA ST. 75: In Tempe, Ariz., T.J. Leaf scored 25 points for UCLA.

The Bruins (25-3, 12-3 Pac-12) won their sixth straight game. Aaron Holiday added 17 points and Thomas Welsh had eight points and 11 rebounds in 18 minutes.

Torian Graham led the Sun Devils (1316, 6-10) with 28 points.

(15) CINCINNATI 87, MEMPHIS 74: In Cincinnati, Jacob Evans III scored 12 of his 15 points during Cincinnati’s dominant first half and the Bearcats (25-3, 14-1 American Athletic) held on for their 25th straight home victory.

Memphis (18-10, 8-7) has dropped a season-high three straight.

OHIO ST. 83, (16) WISCONSIN 73: In Columbus, Ohio, C.J. Jackson scored 18 points on 4-for-4 shooting from 3-point range for Ohio State.

JaQuan Lyle had 17 points and Jae’Sean Tate added 15 points for the Buckeyes (1613, 6-10 Big Ten).

Bronson Koenig had 27 points for Wisconsin (22-6, 11-4).

(22) KENTUCKY 78, (3) MISSISSIPP­I STATE 75 (OT): In Lexington, Ky., Makayla Epps scored the go-ahead basket with 8.7 seconds remaining in overtime and Evelyn Akhator had eight points in the extra session to give the Wildcats (20-8, 11-4 SEC) an upset victory over the Bulldogs (27-2, 13-2).

After Akhator’s layup with 55 seconds left tied it 75, Epps grabbed Makenzie Cann’s missed 3-pointer and moved in for the soft tip-in to put Kentucky ahead to stay in a tense game featuring nine ties and 15 lead changes — with most coming after halftime. Maci Morris’s free throw with 1.8 seconds left sealed the victory and the Wildcats’ eighth straight 20-win season. In Seattle, Kelsey Plum continued her march toward the all-time career scoring mark with 25 points and Chantel Osahor had 24 points and 20 rebounds to pace the Huskies (26-4, 14-3) past the Buffaloes (1513, 5-12) in a Pac-12 game.

Plum, who entered with a nation-best 30.9 average, pushed her career total to 3,340, second in NCAA Division I history behind Jackie Stiles, who scored 3,393 points at Southwest Missouri State from 1998-2001.

(14) LOUISVILLE 66, VIRGINIA 55: In Louisville, Ky., Asia Durr scored 24 points, Myisha Hines-Allen added 21 and the Cardinals (24-6, 11-4 ACC) defeated the Cavaliers (18-10, 7-8).

NEW MEXICO STATE 66, UTAH VALLEY 53: In Orem, Utah, Zaire Williams scored 17 points, Moriah Mack added 14 and the Aggies (20-6, 12-0 WAC) beat the Wolverines (8-19, 3-9) to sweep the season series.

This was the 13th straight win for the Aggies, the second longest in program history.

ANGELO STATE 89, ENMU 82: In Portales, the Rams (21-4, 15-4) ended a fourgame winning streak by the Greyhounds (20-6, 16-3 Lone Star). Eastern, ranked 18th in the NCAA Division II media poll, has already clinched at least a share of the league title. Jasmine Hotchkins led ENMU with 16 points.

WNMU 75, TEXAS A&M-KINGSVILLE 67: In Silver City, Jordan Gutierrez scored 36 points and added 10 rebounds as the Mustangs (5-21, 1-18 Lone Star) toppled the Javelinas (12-13, 7-12).
