BYU ends Gonzaga’s unbeaten season

SPOKANE, Wash. — Eric Mika had 29 points and 11 rebounds to help BYU upset No. 1 Gonzaga 79-71 on Saturday night, ending the Bulldogs’ quest to go undefeated in the final game of the regular season.

Mika’s basket with a minute left gave BYU (21-10, 12-6 West Coast) a 73-71 lead.

Gonzaga (29-1, 17-1) lost the ball on its next two possession­s, and Corbin Kaufusi had a putback and Mika hit two free throws to put it away.

The last team to finish the entire season undefeated was Indiana in 1975-76.

Gonzaga jumped to an 18-2 lead in the first five minutes, going 7-for-10.

BYU’s T.J. Haws hit three straight 3s and the Cougars cut the lead to a point, before Gonzaga led 41-35 lead at halftime.

Gonzaga led 58-46 midway through the second.

(2) VILLANOVA 79, (23) CREIGHTON 63: At Villanova, Pa., Eric Paschall scored a season-high 19 points and Josh Hart added 16 to help Villanova clinch its fourth straight Big East regular-season title. Kris Jenkins scored 15 points and Mikal Bridges had 11 for the defending national champions.

Marcus Foster scored 25 points and Khyri Thomas had 17 for Creighton, which has lost six of 10 after an 18-1 start.

(3) KANSAS 77, TEXAS 67:

In Austin, Texas, Josh Jackson scored 18 points and Frank Mason III added 16 to help Kansas beat Texas and win its 13th consecutiv­e Big 12 regular-season championsh­ip outright.

Devonte Graham and Dwight Coleby added points 12 apiece for the Jayhawks (26-3, 14-2 Big 12).

Jarrett Allen led Texas (10-19, 4-12) with 20 points.

(5) UCLA 77, (4) ARIZONA 72:

In Tucson, Thomas Welsh scored 12 of his 14 points in the second half and UCLA dominated the offensive boards to beat Arizona. The Bruins (26-3, 13-3) snapped Arizona’s 21-game home-court winning streak and dropped the Wildcats (26-4, 15-2) into a tie with Oregon for first place in the Pac-12.

UCLA, avenging a 96-85 home loss to Arizona on Jan. 21, took control with a 19-4 second-half run. La Cueva High graduate Bryce Alford had 15 points and six rebounds, but was 4-of-12 from the floor.

(6) OREGON 75, STANFORD 73: In Stanford, Calif., Jordan Bell scored on a putback with 14 seconds left to give Oregon (264, 15-2) a Bay Area sweep for the first time since 1976. The Ducks won at Cal earlier in the week.

(8) NORTH CAROLINA 85, PITTSBURGH 67: In Pittsburgh, Justin Jackson scored 23 points, Joel Berry added 19 and North Carolina continued its march to the Atlantic Coast Conference regular-season title.

The Tar Heels (25-5, 13-3) have won four straight.

IOWA ST. 72, (9) BAYLOR 69: In Ames, Iowa, Deonte Burton scored 22 points, including a crucial 3 with 1:17 left, and Iowa State (19-9, 11-5 Big 12) won its fifth straight.

MIAMI 55, (10) DUKE 50: In Coral Gables, Fla., Bruce Brown scored 25 points, and Miami (208, 10-6 ACC) held Duke a staggering 32 points below its season average. The Hurricanes dominated inside while Duke (22-7, 10-6) lost its second straight to an unranked opponent.

(11) KENTUCKY 76, (13) FLORIDA 66: In Lexington, Ky., Malik Monk scored 30 of his 33 points in the second half and Bam Adebayo added 18 points with 15 rebounds as Kentucky (24-5, 14-2) took over the Southeaste­rn Conference lead. Florida (23-6, 13-3) had won nine straight.

(12) WEST VIRGINIA 61, TCU 60: In Fort Worth, Daxter Miles Jr. made a free throw with 4.8 seconds left for West Virginia (23-6, 11-5 Big 12).

MICHIGAN 82, (14) PURDUE 70: In Ann Arbor, Mich., Moe Wagner scored 22 of his 24 points in the first half for Michigan. Derrick Walton added 17 points and 11 rebounds for the Wolverines (19-10, 9-7 Big Ten), who have won five of six. Caleb Swanigan scored 18 points for the Boilermake­rs (23-6, 12-4), whose six-game winning streak was snapped.

(17) SMU 69, UCONN 61: In Hartford, Conn., Shake Milton had 20 points and seven rebounds to lead SMU.

The Mustangs (25-4, 15-1 American Athletic Conference) won their 11th straight. The Huskies (14-14, 9-7), who have dropped two straight after a four-game winning streak, were led by Kentan Facey’s 15 points.

BOISE STATE 85, SAN JOSE STATE 78: In Boise, Idaho, Paris Austin scored 18 points, Alex Hobbs added 16 points, Zach Haney grabbed 10 rebounds and Boise State (18-9, 11-5) beat San Jose State. Terrell Brown led San Jose State (14-13, 7-9) with 15 points before fouling out.

NEVADA 94, UNLV 58: In Las Vegas, Nev., Jordan Caroline scored 31 points, Marcus Marshall made eight 3-pointers and finished with 28 points, and Nevada (23-6, 12-4) won its fourth straight. Marshall is the third player in the Mountain West to top 100 3s and the first since Jimmer Fredette made 124 for BYU in 2010. The Rebels (10-18, 3-12) have lost nine straight.

CSU 56, SDSU 55: In Fort Collins, Colo., Emmanuel Omogbo hit a 3-pointer with 4 seconds left as Colorado State beat San Diego State. Omogbo finished with 11 points and 11 rebounds.

The Rams (20-9, 12-4) are tied with Nevada for first place while the Aztecs are 16-12, 8-8.

UTAH STATE 89, AIR FORCE 58: In Logan, Utah, the Aggies (13-15, 7-10) got 24 points from Jalen Moore and ripped the Falcons (11-18, 4-12).

NMSU 86, SEATTLE 53: In Las Cruces, Eli Chuha scored 17 points and had 11 rebounds, Braxton Huggins made four 3s and scored 16 points, and New Mexico State (24-5, 10-3 Western Athletic Conference) bounced back after its 23-game home win streak was snapped by Utah Valley on Thursday. Seattle is 13-15, 5-8.

ANGELO STATE 79, WNMU 73: In Silver City, senior Emery Range scored 21 points on Senior Day for the Mustangs (2-24, 0-18), whose season is over after going winless in the Lone Star Conference. ASU is 15-11, 7-11.
